Hello, I'm relatively new to coin collecting. A few years ago I was handed down this 1921 Morgan silver dollar that is encased in a plastic slab. The coin is in pretty good condition, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off putting it in a mylar saflip or just keeping it in this case? To me, it looks like the coin was pressed down into the holder and a plastic cap put over top, rather than it being cast. The reason I believe this is because I can tap on the back of the case and hear a slight clank. I have no idea how long it has been in this case; could be 40-70 years. I also don't know if the coin has been cleaned. Any insight on these matters would help, Thanks.
:welcome: GreatWalrus, 1921 Morgans are the most common ones. Looks like this one was made to be a desk paperweight. I would leave it that way, if it were mine.
Many years ago, I worked for a company that (mass) produced that type of product. All coins that were encased like this were heavily cleaned before being encased. If I were you, I'd leave it as it is. The product used adheres to the coin and cannot be completely removed, even with chemicals like acetone. It is so tough that it may even take some of the coin with it in any attempt to crack it out. It's a common coin, but don't totally destroy it, leave it as it is.

The 1921 Morgan is the most common issue. The coin in your case seems to have been cleaned and polished, thus robbing it of any numismatic value. If it was mine, I'd leave it as is on my desk.
That would be a cool item to have around the desk. First time I have seen those kind of holder though.
1896 Morgans encased in plasitc coaster Ladies and gentlemen, I too have Morgans (27 of them) that are totally encased in epoxy or something!!! I don't know if these were cleaned prior to being encased or not. Has anybody ever seen anything like this? To extricate these Morgans from their home, they would have to be melted! The coins appear to be in fantastic shape with a high mirror finish. My question is...do you think these coins have value beyond their silver content? Would I be able to auction these off to a collector? Any discussion on the matter would greatly be appreciated, thank you.
I have a peace dollar in the round version of those plastic holders and find it to be a cool card protector or desk item. I think the peace dollar inside has been gold leafed or dipped in something or maybe som kind of foil because it has a gold color to it. Its a real peace dollar but has something around it, no idea what. Cool pieces.
