Hi - I just found this coin at the home of some friends of mine. I want to give them the coin to keep with the house and I was hoping to provide more info about it as to its variety. I hope there is still enough detail to do this. Thank you
Thank you! It was a thrill to dig. Just my 2nd 1790s large cent (other was a 1795). It was a brighter green when it came out of the ground and I wish I could have kept that color but I couldn't make out the last digit of the date so I had to clean it a bit.
This one is somewhat easy to narrow down due to the exceptionally wide [LIB]ERTY. I believe it's either S-160 (R-4) or S-161 (R-1). Both share the same obverse die (Breen-17). The difference is in the reverse dies (Breen-P/Q). I'm unable to distinguish the reverse diagnostics from these pictures. I doubt an in-hand examination would help...given the condition of the coin. It's an interesting keepsake, though. I would treat it with Verdi-Care™ to arrest the verdigris (green color) to prevent further deterioration. I get mine from Wizard Coin Supply. :thumb:
Thank you so very much! I'm putting this all on a card for them. They love their old house so I know they will be happy with this coin. And they only thought their house dated to the 1840s so this really is special.
looks like a 1798 draped bust cent. Also appears to be of the style 2 hair. I could be totally wrong however, when something isn't fully clear the eyes tend to see what the mind wants to see.
As mentioned it has type 2 hair so it can't be S-160 or 161. Type 2 hair with a small 8 is going to put it somewhere from 172 to 187. wide separation of the digits, die chip at the upper left of the 7, S-184 or 185. From the positioning of the wreath stems I'd say S-185.
