I saw a jealous poster with the same attitude at a local coin website. It's not that clever or unique. Just a bad attitude IMO. If you were unable to notice that you probably shouldn't be posting.
The more I look at those pics of the buffalo, the more I am convinced I see a DDO. What an awesome bargain bin cherrypick for $1.50! I think that the 27S Peace is an S/S too now, upon inspection with the aid of my CPG. It was a great show, though. One vendor had banknotes from every little town bank in my area :kewl: It took him decades to assemble, and some of those banks only circulated a few thousand notes. Very impressive. Best of all, 3 vendors liked to talk about coins as much as I do That was worth the trip all in itself. I'm proud to have taken my little bro to his first coin show, and he's pumped up to go to another! Mission accomplished!
Sorry, but no. The real variety has a lot more doubling on the relief that is not visible on yours. Compare and you will see. The alteration is quite common and is nothing more than damage. Being as the new "word" is profane and highly offensive to some, it is probably something you not should use as an avatar. I also suggest editing the photo... maybe black out the altered letter from the reverse image and post another photo of the letter only if this is something you really want people to see.
I contacted mods before posting to be sure it was ok. They are welcome to delete the pic if they want, but it's funny! (I was joking about the avatar!) Can't we collect coins and have a sense of humor? Some apparently can not (not saying you), but I sure can, and do! As far as editing the photo, poo. Why have it at all then? Someone did the tooling a loooong time ago. And it certainly did start a conversation at home! If people are offended, I guess they are free to close the image. Problem solved. Especially if it is so common, though I've never seen one before. A common occurance shouldn't be a shock to anyone. I also have a beat up $1 FRN with a speech bubble over GW's head that says "I grew hemp" I save it. I share it. I have fun, and hope everyone else does too. Well, like I said in post #1, it was very difficult to image the Nic-a-Date at all. I think I need to put it away for a period of time so I can look at it more objectively later. After all, when it is so hard to make out a primary date, one can only come to the conclusion that a secondary date is even harder. Maybe after a few days or a week I'll be up for trying to take more photos, but that session really had the steam coming out of my ears. \
I understand the difficulty of post-acid imaging, but my point was not to worry so much about the date itself since if it were the variety, there should be doubling visible elsewhere on the coin, even in this condition. If you take a look at a few known examples and compare, I am sure you will see what I mean. It is the mods call to make, but the fact remains that the word can be highly offensive to some people regardless of when the alteration was done. It could be that Vess did not take kindly to the word, so instead of seeing his remark as jealousy or saying "poo" on the editing suggestion, please try to understand that not everyone will see the supposed humor in such a thing. As for the alteration being common, this is of course relative. Just because you have not seen this before, it does not mean the same goes for everyone else. Individual sensibilities vary widely, and my only point was that it is wise to be aware of this. That said, whatever you choose to do or believe is up to you.
Nice pickups. Sounds like you had a lot of fun - the most important thing. The flying eagle does look cleaned and I would put it at f details. No clue about the price. As for the large cent - you can usually find these altered coins on ebay - not sure you can get one for $3 thought. And it should be the late 30's - wrong head style for early 30's and early 40's. So it is probably 1835 to 1837(looks like a plain hair cord). Of course Conder and Marshal could probably give the exact date.
I just went to a coin show today. It was suppose to be till 4 pm and showed up at 3:15 pm and everyone was gone. Is that common?
Ok guys, I paid $35 for the Flying Eagle, and $40 for the 27S Peace. They were priced at $75 and $86, respectively. @ BooksB4Coins: I took offence with the personal comment Vess made to me: "If you were unable to notice that you probably shouldn't be buying coins" This is uncalled for, and unwarranted. How can someone presume to judge me over a $3 bargain bin coin? I fully expected some interesting comments regarding the coin. Not a personal attack. I hope you agree. Have you ever grabbed a handful out of a bargain bin and just bought them? Better than playing the lottery if you're going to take a gamble. And if it needs any more clarification, I will say that though I spent about four hours there total (didn't seem like it ) I never get to spend as much time as I want to. I had been gabbing with that vendor for a while, and when he said he was going to start packing up, I grabbed a small handful before he put them away. I referred to most of that handful earlier with the expression "little piddlies" as most weren't anything too special. But what the heck? Mark h is right. I had fun. And I opened my little brothers' eyes to another facet of the hobby.
It must have been pretty slow for them. Same as restaurants closing up early on Sunday night; normally the least busy day of the week for most. GO EARLIER! No matter when you get there, there is NEVER enough time to see everything that catches your eye.
I absolutely agree that his response was a little harsh, especially over a $3 purchase. My intent was not to defend him, and only to point out that it is best to understand that some may take offense to the word. Not that his post was in reaction to it (I obviously do not know) but it is worth considering. As it should have been for both of you. Hopefully this didn't take anything away from that.
I did a little comparing with good photos of an authentic DDO, mine, and regular 1916 and I see the other points of interest to look for. The thing is, I still believe that its a DDO, but that the doubling on the nose, chin, forehead, rear feather, and cord in hair has been very worn just like the rest of the coin. If you look at the cord in the hair nearest the date, on the DDO it is significantly thicker overall due to the doubling than that of a normal 1916. I believe the cord on mine is thicker than a normal one. I can also see the bump on the chin where the doubling ends/begins on mine. And on the DDO the right side of the rear feather is flatter than that of the normal 1916. I think mine fits the bill. I will delve into it a little deeper in a couple of days. Sorry but I tried to take more pics tonight but I'm just too tired. Long work day tomorrow. Maybe Tuesday, now that I know what other elements to look for, I can take and post pics so we can discuss it further. Until then, have a good day!
I really doesn't matter what others say really, as long you are satisfied with your purchases. If you think you received a good value, that is all that matters. To you, grabbing a bunch of coins out of a bargain bin is like the lottery and that is fine. I once picked out some world coins I thought looked like silver and none of them were. If I bought a coin and was satisfied with the purchase, I wouldn't be concerned. Redbook on both buffs at G4 are $6 anyhow, not that I would by coins at Redbook prices. I did get a chance to look at one bin at this one coin show that was ending early and I found their prices a little high compared to some deals I got on Ebay.
Yes, they might have all left because of football. I was looking for a couple dealers. One dealer that buys coins I have for sale and the other just had a small bin with all these older coins like large cents, seated coins, flying eagles, and shield nickels.
Maybe a speakeasy since it cannot be specifically linked to any particular extablishment. Still US currency that could always be used as money, the defacement and the fact that it's phased out at that time of our history would make it the perfect token to purchase for $X, to be redeemed for.... services. Anyone could claim to not have noticed it. (How many non-colletors out there have we heard that say they never look at their money other than to spend it?)
That's classic. Whoever said that's just an error is a dolt. It's carved, hobo nickle-esque...love it!
I'm guessing this guy doesn't work at the barrel of laughs store. Imagine if he were your father...I couldn't hang myself quickly enough.
