I am a maniac for Canadian nickels. It seems there is no end to the different coins I can include in my set. So I noticed a dramatic reverse cameo like appearance on a couple nickels dated 2011 and 2012 which I bought. Here is a picture of what these look like. Now I wonder, just how far back do the specimen coins go with this effect? I just bought a dual dated 1952-2002 that has this appearance but it seems that it is not quite as dramatic as the more recent issues.
According to Coins of Canada 2011 by Haxby and Willey (page 239), specimen sets were issued in brilliant relief in a parallel-lined background beginning in 1996.
I suppose I might try and get one of each. It would probably cost me around 30 - 35 bucks to complete this run. Thanks for the good answer onecenter!
Gladly. Current Canadian coins come in three finishes, proof, lined specimen and brilliant uncirculated, all very collectible!
It appears I am down to needing only 6 dates at this time. I am going to post in the wanted section but wonder if there is any good reason why these dates might be more difficult to find at reasonable prices. 1996 1997 1999 2001 2005 2008 So far I have purchased the 1998 2000 2002 ( dual dated ) 2003 2004 2006 2007 2009 2010 2011 2012 I also picked up the silver proof 2000 2001 an 2002 RCM commemoratives. I am hoping to find a 1935-2010 commemorative with the reverse of 1922 style 5 cent nickel. These are really tough to find.
