Here are some coins in the listing blown up so you can see. I circled the flaws which i think make these particular coins a bad purchase, notice how the 78 is smooth and does not have the flaws of the first two examples have that is the only gem IMO....

They are still gem proofs, no matter how many circles you draw. Are they 70s/ NO, but they are nice proofs.

i would buy each one separately on ebay and find ones with the heaviest cameo.

Those complete proof sets can generally be had for $8.50 or so, so you could go that route too...

Could also start out by buying the brown and blue Ikes. Just a thought. That would give you coins to look at and they come nicely protected. I believe all but the 73 brown Ike can be had for a little over ten bucks each. The 73 Brown would be like 30 something.

Personally, I think thats a great price! The alternative is to purchase your own proof sets which would run a heckuva a lot more than $39.95.

Dave's a fair dealer and as such, I went ahead and ordered 2 sets.

    He could.

    But

$8.50 (plus shipping) * 6 = $51.00 (plus whatever the individual shipping might be). These cost at least $3.00 to ship so if they were purchased separately, tack on another $12.00 provided thats what was charged.

Once the sets arrive, the dilemma of CAMEO/Deep CAMEO still exists plus the buyer needs to figure out what to do with the other coins in the set since these sets to not open as cleanly as the 1999 to date sets do.

Of course, the OP could go the coin shop route and purchase them but some coin dealers make their profits off of these IKE's. I recall a certain dealer that charged $1- to $20 each for nice specimens.

All in all, I think Dave's listing is a great deal. You just do not know what condition the coins are but then, each could be upgraded over time and that same scenario would exist with individual sets.

I look forward to seeing them once they arrive, I've seen his stuff out there as well but was hesitant based on not seeing something (photo wise) first..

The price is no doubt fair but like i said its about the quality, If it was me i would spend the money to get slabbed MS69s because personally i feel those are the only ones that will offer any kind of decent return and with patience they can be had for not much money a serious collector would have no problem completing a set of them. I understand that is not everyone's agenda and some people do not feel the same way but anyway you should post a pic of the ones you receive because ultimately that will determine if you got a deal or not.

While I do understand what you are saying, sometimes it's only about collecting them. For every fella that wants a good return, which on IKE Proofs can be very haphazard, there are 10 who simply want a collection of coins which were produced during their lifetimes, actually were available at face value, but are no longer available at every cash register or bank thats visited.

I have many IKE Proofs which are barely worth the grading fee's it took to get them graded not to mention the initial acquisition costs.

Personally, I've shopped around for these CnClad proofs for my Dansco's. Few come as cheaply as the ones in the OP. Sure, they might not be top notch coins. Might not even be DCAMs. But they'll fit their slots wuite nicely without breaking the bank.

Thanks! I'm still waiting on this book. I just received the IKE Group book (wow!). It looks like I have a little light reading to do!

It's nice to have the references in hand as coins present themselves.

The ikegroup.org is a great reference, lots of great people over there willing to help and a wealth of knowledge on Ikes.
It really depends on what you're looking for with these coins. If you are looking to have a graded set these aren't the best examples, but for Dansco's they will do just fine.

I currently have 525 Ike's and what I totally enjoy about the Ike's - [ Is buying them and then spending time looking for the many different Varieties - Diva's - Die Clashes - Machine Doubling - Double Die's and so on. Last week I actually found an Peg Head. ] A lot of people on eBay actually do not know exactly what they are selling- and will not knowingly sell you a very good Ike @ a very low price. Just keep looking. I personally will NOT purchase any IKE without first knowing that they copin I am looking at is in-fact the coin that I purchase and receive.
