Silver Dollars **updated with pics I know someone who has a lot of silver dollars that he wants to sell. Suposivly there older some even 1930's. He wants about 19 dollars apiece but i may be able to get them cheaper. My question is which particular dates and stuff should i look for? Maybe is there a list somewhere?
Try looking here http://www.pcgs.com/prices/ While these values obviously aren't set in stone, and pcgs's values are often high, they will give you an idea of which coins are worth more. Buying yourself a 'Redbook' will do the same. Just remember, they are only guides.
Alot of this depends on their grade as far as value goes. There are some key dates for the Peace dollar but only a few. The dates are: 1921 (doubt if he has any of these) 1928 1934-S They should be in VF-20 grade and above if at all possible. $19 a piece would be ok for other dates if they are Mint State. If not then you are just paying more than spot silver prices and this is not a good deal IMO. Are they Peace dollars? Let us know how it turns out.
He has about 3 bags of mixture peace/morgan dollars i bought 24 today. 15 morgans 9 peace dollars. but he is willing to sell more they are all in pretty good shape i just dont really know what to look for so peace dollars are worth more? ill post some pics later.
1926 0 mint 1925 no mint 1922 s mint id say he has at least 500 of peace/morgan so i will buy more and no what to look for next time.
now on to listing the morgans 1891 o 1921 no mint 1882s mint 1880 o mint 1890o mint 1891 o mint 1890 o mint 1885no mint 1879 s mint 1891 no mint 1889 o mint 1880 o mint 1881 s mint 1921 d mint 1883 no mint so out of all i list what do you think is worth the most?
He more than likely cherry picked them and took most of the more valuable Peace dollars out. The dates mentioned above. Actually, Morgan dollars, for the most part are more valuable than Peace dollars. I just happen to like the look of the Peace dollar better. What Morgans did you get from him?
What he has done is given you a pick of all of the more common ones. Grade would determine their value. Lets say, just for example, that they are all the same grade, will take the low end of the scale, this way if they are better then you just have a little bonus. Lets say they are all VF-20, which is still a pretty good looking silver dollar, just not choice like most Morgan collectors are after, but they still have value. On value alone most are worth $20-25 a piece. Not bad, still above melt value but nothing up on the crazy scale like all of the CC minted ones or perhaps some of the more valuable P, D or S minted ones. Can give you a list of those also if you need it.
I dont think he has gone through any of them, he is a friends dad. I dont think he knows much about them. I would love a list.
If he has bags of them mixed together then he has what is known as junk silver. You can buy bags of it anytime you want and as many bags as you want. They sell them, $1000 face value, based on the spot price of silver. If you want the coins as a way of starting a collection, OK fine. Although I would recommend against it because you can get much nicer examples that you pick individually for about the same price. But if you think you are getting a deal or a special price here - you're not really. In fact if you are paying $19 each - you're probably paying too much.
Okie doke: Anything with a CC mint mark. 1884-S 1885-S 1886-S 1888-S 1889-S 1892-S 1893 1893-S (if you see one of these grab it first) 1894 1894-O 1894-S 1895-O 1895-S 1896-S 1898-S 1899 1899-S 1900-O 1901 1901-S 1902-S 1903 1903-O 1903-S 1904-S These are the ones you really want to be looking for. This will make your $19 happy and if you can talk him down a little more that would be even better.
Yes GDJMSP makes the right point. It is all grade, as discussed before, it they are junk silvers then you are overpaying. Is it possible for you to post a pic of a couple of the nicer ones?
Common date VF morgans are probably worth closer to $14-$15 than to $20-$25. But a truly unsearched large group of morgans for $19 each would make an interesting speculative investment. No telling what is in there. If you want to just quickly pick out some coins for yourself without having a Redbook in front of you, I would suggest taking all of the Morgans with an S or CC mintmark, and any Peace dollar dated 1927 or later. You could also take out any Morgan from 1892 through 1895. If you do that, on balance you should come out ahead if you pay $19 per coin. Of course, the honest thing to do is sit with your friend with a Redbook and something like Photograde and determine the approximate fair value of each coin. Otherwise, one of you is going to get burned. Things like this sometimes end a friendship.
i scanned 12 morgans but need to know how to post them by the way i no they are not scrap but some have been cleaned i can tell but i can choose not to buy the cleaned ones. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW TO POST PICS
here are pictures of 12 of the morgans ill get some scans of the peace dollars later and eventually im going to post each coin 1 at a time so you guys can estimate grade and value. I know that the pics say 65 quarter but its because i finally got some scans of the 65 quarter that im trying to figure out and its being discussed in another thread.
Not the greatest but definitely not junk silver either. The scans are a little small so hard to give an accurate grade but I don't think any of them are below VF-20, nor are any of them Mint State either. I have a few that look just like them and I am happy with them. If you are like me, limited funds (I haven't bought but 1 coin in the past few weeks) then circulated coins make you just as happy as MS-67 certified Morgan or Peace dollars. Would I like better coins? Sure, who wouldn't, but I have to eat and pay bills also and I don't make much money. If you can post each coin by itself I can give you a better grade on them. Remember, these are only my opinions on grade.
