I'm looking for a book for Bust Half Dollar attribution and of course Al Overton came to mind. I have heard that the third edition is the best to use and I am watching one now on eBay. It says Revised edition, third printing. Is that the same thing? What would be a good price for that. Also, if any ancient experts happen the be here, what would be a good book that covers ancient Roman coinage in it's entirety, until I find a niche. Sorry for so many questions and thank you in advance for your help.
I recommend Dr. Glen Peterson's book, but it covers capped bust halves exclusively, 1807-1836. For draped bust and flowing hair, get Overton 3rd or 4th edition. It's a cool way to learn a LOT about coins.
Thank you for the advise, I wasn't sure anyone was going to reply. I just have a quick question. Does The Ultimate Guide for Attributing Capped Bust Half Dollars use the Overton variety numbers, and can you give me an approximate price.
I'm concerned the"revised edition" would indicate the second edition from 1970, that was the title it used. The third edition (1990) says Third edition First Printing. I'm not sure what my Fourth edition says because it is currently loaned out. The Peterson Guide does use the Overton numbers. Price will not be cheap. It is out of print and pretty much out of stock everywhere. No copies on Amazon or abesbooks either new or used. Unfortunately you just missed a copy in the Lakes Books sale that ended Saturday, went cheap at $60.
I have a copy of Overton's 3rd edition I'd be willing to sell. I call it in "like new" condition because i've looked through it over the years, but it's not damaged in the slightest or written in, with the exception of my name and the date I bought it written inside the front cover. If you're interested CB p/m me and we can work something out. Bruce
They pop up on eBay occasionally. That's where I got mine. Sometimes they realize realistic prices, but more often they get kookoo $$$ bids. Purchasing through a private source (here at CT, a local dealer, etc), rather than bidding on one via eBay, is probably your best bet. The 3rd Edition is hard to come by. Even I had trouble finding a copy for the longest time - http://www.cointalk.com/t193571/. When the opportunity arises for you to purchase one for under $80, don't hesitate to accept.
