i was wrapping a bag of pennies today at the bank, and i came across a few dozen wheat cents that were all abused in the same way. it looks as though someone notched a chunk out of the rim of each one with a file or something. all the notches are in the area of about 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock, with a few of them having a similar notch ground out on the opposite edge of the rim. here's a pic for reference: anyone seen these before, or have any idea why someone would mark coins in such a manner?
i checked them all for rare dates, and most of them are common. i had the same thought as you did, and wondered if maybe a collector had neglected his wife in favor of his collection for so long that she exacted her revenge the best way she could. women.
i'm going home tonight to see if i can get the notches to align. perhaps lincoln will materialize from the shadows and slay a vampire or something.
These look like they were used to dress a grinding wheel, my step father owns and operates a grinding shop. I have seen him use a copper penny to dress his grinding wheels before sharpening something like high speed steel drill bits and this is what they look like after, just a thought....
Ken, I'm worried about you old fellow. You're talking funny about aliens and stuff. You didn't come across a hidden batch of old granny's "recipe" did you? Oh, by the way, I agree about the alignment of the notches...only bad things will come out of that. Bruce
Maybe some farmer from then was testing out his ear marker?(to take a notch out of critters ears as identification)?
