I got off work an hour early. Got alot of errands run that I needed to do. On my way home, got 2 rolls of nickels from the bank. I have not been searching rolls very long. In fact this is just like the 5th roll of nickels I searched. Anyway, the third one I pulled out of the roll was a 1939, in AU condition. I went upstairs and showed it to my mom. She said "oh, I almost forgot. I was helping your grandmother clean her house yesterday, and found this! She said you can have it." And then my mom proceeded to hand me a large box of coins. Many are common foreign ones. But so far I've found some old barber quarters, and almost an entire complete collection of wheaties! And I've barely even started going through the box!

I just wanted to share todays finds because 1. I have no freinds outside this forum who would care to hear about it. And 2. I never get lucky like this.
    Have a nice day.

I could use a lucky day like that about now. Sounds like Grandma should get a big hug. Good luck searching through the rest of the box.

Yes, grandma will be getting a big hug, a big thank you, and I'll probably mow her yard and help with some chores this weekend (which I've been meaning to do anyway).
I found out a little more about the box. My late grandfather tucked it away about 20 years ago. About half the coins were U.S., half were foreign. My grandparents were world travelers, and got most of the foreign ones during those travels. There was one particular envelope in the box that were from all over the pacific rim in the 30's and 40's which we beleive my grandfather picked up while serving with the navy on a PT boat in WW2. Anyway, I found nothing worth a fortune. But it was really a treat to search over a century of coins!! The oldest was an 1877 brittish penny. The newest was a 1985 german 5 pfennings.
The only wheaties that I didn't find were: 1909 VDB, 1909-S, 1909-S VDB, and all of the 1922's and 23's.
Barber quarters included 1908-D, 1912, 1916-D, 1892-O, and 1902. Some of the coins were in decent condition, some were not. And like I said, nothing worth a whole lot. But, searching a 108-year span of coins that my grandfather tucked away 20 years ago was quite a treat. Thanks for listening to my story freinds.

Oh. I forgot to mention; there were also some other historical items in the box: old Missouri tax tokens, some buttons or medals which I think went on my grandfather's navy uniform, and a J.F.K. button from when he was campaining for president, etc.

Cool---the ones that you have then (not listed in the above quote) that I would make sure are real is the 1914-D/1931-S and the 1924-D.....the 1924-D is hard to find in higher grades.

Guess I'm going to have to start looking at searching rolls of nickels. Thanks for the idea, It's a good one.

Hey Speedy, I'm pretty sure they're real, but unfortunately, are in low grades.

Even in low grades they are worth a few bucks, but more importantly, it's still nice to own those coins which once belonged to your grandfather. A lot more value than if you went and purchased them.:smile

Exactly. I had a blast going through them. And just holding them. For me personally, coin collecting has never really been about monetary value though.
