My observations at the show yesterday in Manchester: most of the significant buying had happened Thursday night before the show officially started on Friday, where the big boys were able to buy lots of fresh material. A few sellers walked in with nice collections, one group of $10 Indians with some of the scarcer dates was notable sold to Steve's collectibles and quickly resold. An excellent site for a New England show; drawing Maine dealers and customers as well as other northern New England customers. I watched some of Littleton's buying patterns and it looks like they will pay top dollar but just for coins that are on their want lists and at the grade they judge as favorable; but they turn up their noses at anything that does not meet their buying program. Huge volume buyers though.
Your observations regarding Littleton are quite accurate. They pay very strongly for the material they want, but it has to meet their quality standards or will be rejected completely. As an example, they buy a large number of low grade IHCs, but when they tell dealers or collectors that the coins must grade solid G4 with complete rims it means the coins must grade solid G4 with complete rims and any coin that is not all there will not be purchased. They refuse a fair number of coins in those type of lots when buying at shows.
I just returned from the NH Coin and Currency Expo where the New England Numismatic Association holds their Annual Meeting and Judged Exhibit Show. This year I entered a 5 case exhibit on Collecting German Notgeld. I won Best of Show which includes an engraved silverplate platter and a 2012 1/10th ounce $5 gold piece, I also won Peoples Choice which includes a wooden plaque and a one ounce 2012 ASE. Pictures will follow soon in another thread Richard
Sad that I missed this show! First NH Coin Expo in 7 years I have missed!!! Can't wait for the spring show though when I'll be back from college.
Thats awesome! I'm interested in seeing pictures. Out of curiosity, how was attendance at the YN program? Thats the place I got started and I think I will always have an invested interest in it.
