Hey everybody- I was going through my old coin books because they're getting ratty and need to be replaced. In the wheat penny book I got to looking at the different types of damage on some of these coins. My only 1909 is in pretty bad shape... for instance. Anyway, I noticed some odd surface problems on this 1935 (picture). I'd like to see if anyone knows what you would call this type of error.... ? this has been sitting in the book since the 70's so I don't know how I missed it.. what can I say?

1935 penny error copy.jpg Of course i didn't clean it at all. This is how i found it.

    No error.

    It's post mint damage(PMD).

If that were cause by the die being deteriorated it would be raised not recessed, or incused as it is.

Wouldn't that be relatively straight rather than follow the outline of the design like the OPs?

That's what I think. The rest of the coin is actually very clean. It seems to follow the curve of the figure, but nothing else....
