I can’t find anything about this but it’s sure has seen some wear. Hopefully the advertisement helped his business. It’s an 1877 quarter marked G. N. ROUSE.

No mint mark that I can see. I purchase this in an auction. They claim it’s rare because of the counter stamp but I can’t find anything about it. At least it was cheap enough to make me happy.

I love the old counterstamped coins of this era.

G.N. Rouse seems to be an insurance syndicate with Lloyd’s of London, back in the day

I found a Bloomington, Indiana jeweler named George N. Rouse who was in business at least until 1881. The counterstamp very well could be that of a jeweler so I think he's the likely issuer.

Couldn't find much about him, but I do know that he sold his business to a man named John C. Voss in 1881. Included in the sale was $2,000 worth of merchandise which suggests that he retired.

Nothing more about him but I think he very well be the man who stamped the coin.
