Just got this coin, and was wondering what the value might be about? I know its the rarest merc, but ebay prices vary with condition and im not very good and figuring out condition or grades. Also is ebay the best place to sell coins like this, or are there better places?

i am always suspicious of any key date coin that isnt graded by a tpg. but thats because i am by no means an expert. it looks legit to me but im sure someone who knows more will be able to help you and hopefully better educate us how to verify the authenticity of this coin.

I'm by no means an expert but being a lover of mercs I look at a lot. The D definitely doesn't look like any merc I've seen, so I'm calling fake. Again, just my bet but I'd take that bet to the track ;) let the experts chim in and see what they say.

That D does look a little strange, but I don't really know what a D mint mark should look like on a 1916 Merc. But other than the D mint mark the coin looks genuine and problem free, and has a very nice patina IMO.
As far as price, I think a dealer would ask about $900-1000 for that coin in that condition. That is just my guess, and I wouldn't be surprised if I was way off.
And yes I would say eBay is good place to get an idea of what certain coins values are, just search the completed listings.

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

    The obverse sure has a W - I - D - E rim. That's what I noticed first.

And an opinion, probably controversial -- I don't think it makes sense to talk about a "patina" on a coin that's barely Very Good...

    I might guess a Good-05. I think I recall a few different positions on the D mintmark.

A larger image of the reverse would definitely help, especially the mintmark and surrounding area. It looks like it might be die pair two, but I cannot tell.

The 1916-D mintmark has the same triangular hole in the D that the 1914-D cent has. See this

It should be authenticated before considering selling it. there are just too many bad ones around, and many of them have been in old time collections and appear well circulated. The cost will be well worth it if it is genuine.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't deal with coins often, what's a die pair and how would it affect the grade or value

With closer images it spears the mint mark is damaged which could mean it is altered. I can't guarantee that though

As others have pointed out, the hole in the D should be triangular in shape which yours is not. Furthermore, almost every coin in the good grade range, shows a mintmark virtually filled in by wear. The mintmark on your coin is nowhere near filled in and shows far too much detail to be on a coin in that condition. My guess is that you have a 1916-P with an added mintmark.

I concur with Lehigh96. I am afraid that this is not a genuine 1916 D and in the mint mark area, I think I can see some angular gouges to the left of the mintmark. Almost as if it were carved out of the field.
The mintmark is wrong, the triangular hole in the D is not there at all.

    Correct Mintmark looks like this
