Conder... this one is for you buddy! I saw this one while logged into my NGC dealer account today. Limited edition — coming October 1, 2012! In celebration of our 25th Anniversary, NGC is offering a Limited Edition Retro Holder and special label. This holder is reminiscent of our original holder used in 1987 featuring a stunning black core. NGC will, for a limited time, again offer this unique holder. These new holders will be available October 1, 2012 for the following coins only. Quantities of the Retro Holder are limited for each coin type and are available only while quantities last. Check the NGC website for holder updates as we will post when a particular holder is no longer available. Submissions must be received by NGC between October 1 and December 31, 2012. Program ends on or before 12/31/2012 based on availability.
Lol, I just got an email about these today, but didn't post a thread since people probably would have accused me again of being "so anti-slab". Boy, what I could say about this....... I will control myself and keep quiet.
I wonder when they are going to start selling sealed slabs with no coins in them... "This slab once held a 1909 S VBD Lincoln Cent in MS60, buy it now for only $50~"
I personally believe this is a marketing test in the form of a promotion to see how quickly these will sell. I know of a few people that have been calling for these for many years now, (especially you Chief). It's about time they gave us back the black inserts and I definitely look forward to getting some gold and silver holdered with that bold background!
I see what you did there. You rascally ancient collector! Lol! Matt, do you know if they are charging extra for the holder, or is it going to go along every submission for that given time?
I like the idea of a black slab insert because I think it makes the coin "pop" a little more. But using it as a sales promotion for a "limited edition issue" in my eyes is nothing more than a shameless attempt to sell more slabs.
The main reason I don't buy many of their graded coins is I hate the white insert. Plus the fact that it's only about a 40% chance to get them into the holder I want at grade. Buying a promo holder is not up my alley either.
What is next custom insert colors (Pink $10, Blue $10, Red $5, Yellow $20, Wood $25)... I am patenting this idea.
BN copper looks horrible in a black holder. The white looks way better for most coins, and as compared to the horrendous bluish-clear cheap looking PCGS holders, the white insert NGC holder is hands-down the best looking of the bunch.
That would be awesome. Also, different colors tinted plastic, instead of BORING transparent clear they got now. And for not so great looking coins, opaque!
They say they will be used for three months and they also say while supplies last. I wonder how large there supply will be? At least these black slabs are edgeview so there will be no confusing them with the rare first generation black slabs.
