Okay expert graders, ---what's your slab label going to say on these two??
Here's a hint: One coin is 4 points nicer than the other.

Lima coin looks to be Au or possibly MS, gets a little tricky with the weakly struck areas, but does not appear to have wear.

German coin looks a solid MS-64 or 65.

4 points or 4 grades ? Bit of a difference in that. If points then 58 and 62 is all it can be.

But I sure hope they didn't grade that 8 reales as a 58. And no, I do not think it was weakly struck, that is wear.

This one, which has a lot more detail was only a 55.

Wow nice example Doug, that one is a relatively strong strike for this type. Surprised it was only a 55. Possibly be due to slight wear on where the ribbons with slogan overlap the columns?

To be honest with you I can't recall seeing any of this type with a weak strike. I used to own quite a few and was always looking for more. Some designs tend to strike up better than others specifically because of the design. That was one of them. The obv on those always had nice details.

And no, it had more wear than just on the ribbons. It was easy to see when you looked at the coin.

Here's another AU example I used to own -

I would agree logically I can only come up with 58 and 62 using US grades. I also agree with Doug 58 seems strong on the 8 Reales but of course its always hard to grade just by a photo.

    so, what is the answer?

Seems to be just this year. I compared to a couple MS examples from Heritage archives and they also had weak striking around and above the ear, plus around the area where the crown and shield meet, like it appears to be on the OP's coin.

Here are the two I looked at:

And yes please tell us the actual grades already =)

We have a winner! Weak strike but with very original fields and nice color. Thought it might sneak into an MS holder, but no such luck. Correct on the Zeppelin coin as well, it's kind of strange that the devices on the coin are nearly perfect, but there are all sorts of little hits in the legends, especially on the obverse. Still, really thought maybe 63 on that one.

Why does the Zeppelin coin have two different
    dates?

The coin commemorates the world flight of the Zeppelin in 1929 and the coin was minted in 1930.

The coin depicts the LZ-127 aka "Graf Zeppelin" which was launched in 1928, but made it's most memorable flight in 1929 when it travelled around the world. The 1929 date commemorates this flight. The 1930-A indicates the year the coin was struck (only year as it turned out) and the letter "A" indicates the mint in Berlin. I f you want to learn a little more about Zeppelins, have a look at this website. You can easily get lost in it and spend hours looking at all the old postcards etc from the era. The photos of the bridge in the LZ-127 are like something right out of a 1950s Ed Wood science fiction movie!
