If it was genuine, that would have been one heck of a deal! Anyway, post better photos when you get it, as it doesn't appear to be from the current crop of Chinese fakes.
I am a little confused about this, you think it might be a fake "novelty" coin? It obviously isn't real based on the material of the token (not a coin), year, and the category under which it was sold. I can't really see any reason why you would need to contact the seller if you do in fact receive the item pictured.
So you thought you might be buying near a half ounce of gold for $26 and now say that if its "obviously fake", you might try to work something out with the seller... the same guy who listed as a novelty and did nothing wrong? So much for due diligence. I would hope that you accept that you gambled and lost, and also as a lesson learned. Regardless of what ebay policy may be, there comes a time when buyers need to have some personal responsibility. Everyone wants that great score, but when it does not happen, many blame and act as if it is the sellers fault, which is wrong.
I also lay part of the blame on ebay for this. In my opinion there should not be a novelty subsection in the US coins section. If someone does a search in US coins for a 10 D eagle this coin would show up in the results of the search along with the legitimate coins. It is by no means a US coin. There should be a completely separate section for novelty items. It irks me to no end when I'm browsing the commemorative catagory and one particular seller lists hundreds of those cheap pot metal painted Elvis coins that I have to slog through.
To the OP...I would count myself lucky I only paid what you did for the lesson. Trying to get a 1/2 oz. of gold for $26? What was your Max Bid to "snipe" this? Imagine if it was many 100's of dollars & the seller had another account & kept bidding you up. What is that term called...??. Can't remember right now. I will have to ask Detecto. Keep the fake & leave no feedback. Let the seller know in a PM why you are not going to leave any FB & leave it at that. Cheers
As far as listing on eBay... no. However, most of DC's work is listed under the category "fantasy issues" (which somehow differs from "novelty"), and ANACS slabs his coins (which, I assume, gives them some legitimacy). I really like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2009-Proof-...031?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7971e32f
i thought I was reading the date wrong or something. I know there isn't a 1909 or 1809 of that variety.
As far as I am concerned, no... just as there is no difference between Carr's "09-O Morgan" and a Chinese "03-CC" other than individual collector views. I've often wondered how a Chinese "09-O" would be looked at, especially if minted in 90%, but we already know the answer to that one.
