My friend who is Mexican recently had the same sort of thing done at his wedding. They presented his wife with 13 silver dimes that represented his promise to provide for her.

Before the ceremony the minister guy was rehearsing saying "arras" correctly with his uncle and aunt, that part was kinda comical.

 

Its really on old tradition. Only in the US can we get married with $30 and divorces with $30,000

 

Is this a little similar to the old custom of love tokens?
