You can always try. The mintmarks on the barber quarter series would almost always leave some sort of trace it would be very hard for them to wear away completely because it is "protected" by the eagles tail. Even in cases with coins are in grades as low as po1 there is usually some remaining trace. Generally if you can see the mm area then you can see the mm. In my opinion if this coin was successfully treated with acid it was to determine placment of the mm when compared to the gap between quarter and dollar.
Well, I hope they don't have to measure up to some of y'all's, but here's a few I had pics of on hand. Anyone notice anything funny about the rev on the D minted coin?
Above the vertical bar of the lower E, 10 o'clock on the bow, 12 o'clock on the bow, slight bridging between the 2nd & 3rd leaves under the corn to your right all look like cud(s)? & maybe a RPM? I dunno, it's a small, circulated coin. Kinda hard to tell with my untrained eyes. Thanks for the response!
Fantastic Dime you have there Elbesaar. I find that the Barbers tone up quite nicely and yours is truth to that!
Your 1893 Proof Dime is spectacular! You have a great eye for Barbers. I can only imagine what your collection is made up of.
I agree Elbesaar. That gorgeous Dime should have been graded at least a 66. What is wrong with those guys at PCGS anyway? It's a looker and I am sure you are very proud.
I remember seeing that coin being sold on GC...I was thinking about bidding on it but the price went up too high for me! A true stunner -- you definitely deserve the coin!
Nice looking 1914-S Half - it should slide into a 40 holder if they are being generous that day but at worst, it's a 35. Nice looking originally toned coin, IMHO. Question: One reverse star seems to be flattened... Post mint damage or do you think it's caused by a greased filled die ??
Thanks. I was aiming for an overall 40 on my year set. Hm, I really don't know. I'd love to get some opinions about that. I'll take a closer look at that when I get home tonight.
Well, aronsamma, what's the verdict ? Here's a duplicate 14-S I had laying around...Now housed in a PCGS 20 Holder - on the BST at PCGS now.
Looks struck through to me. It's not much lower relief than the rest of the stars, but it must have been enough to affect the toning so it looks more extreme now.
Had a few new images taken when I went to the ANA in Phila. Don't remember if I have already showed this one off yet - the dealer mentioned that he just had it reholdered because of scratches - and he lost the CAC by doing so...
