I got this in the mail today. It's the most money I've spent on a single coin thus far in my collecting life. Usually most coins I buy are between 1 and 10 dollars, with most on the low end of that range. This cost me $56 shipped. I'm trying to complete a 20th century Mexican collection though and this is one of the rare ones. 400,000 mintage and Krause lists it at $115 in fair condition. I don't know how this would grade but I felt I needed to get it when I had the chance.
That's about the same as I spent for my '09-S-VDB back in 1954 (actually $60 for an XF example). That equates to around $500+ today. Of course it was my grandmother paying for it, since I didn't have any income. But you're correct... some things you just have to get when the chance presents itself.
Yeah, my purchases are creeping up in value as I fill in the lower value spots in my collection and all the coins I need are higher priced. I need to control myself though.
Nice addition, those are hard to find, I have yet to get one for my estados unidas collection. How far along are you now? Are you also doing all the New Peso coins?
I'm pretty far along. Right now I still need 2 centavos from 1929, 5 centavos from 1912, 1917, 1999 and 2002, 10 centavos from 12 years (all silver except one), 20 centavos from 12 years (all silver), then a few of the modern coins: 1990 10 pesos, 1986 20 pesos, 1992 500 pesos. So yes, I am continuing through the modern era. Some of the fairly modern coins are proving very hard to track down. Recently I got the 1973 1 centavo and 1975 10 pesos, which took forever to find. For now I'm only trying for pesos after 1957 and the non-silver 50 centavos. Basically I'm not yet ready to tackle the high silver value coins. Looking at Krause, there are just too many varieties in the 19th century so I don't feel like going after those right now. I drew the line at about 1905 to start with, since that's when they starting making all their coins at a single mint.
Yeah, I have a Mexican type set with this one missing. I really don't mind as I have never been one to worry about an empty hole in an album. There are like 3 minors around that time frame that are scarce, right?
Nice one. I don't collect this type but able to get hold of a key date is always an accomplishment. Congradulations!
Yes HD, Invite us over! We could discuss the moral implications of collecting Mexican coinage verses US coinage over a spread of tea.
Of the ones I am missing, the 1912 5 centavo is $70 in F, the 1917 5 centavo is $75 in F, and the 1929 2 centavo is $85 in F. There are a few coins that are super, super rare, that Krause doesn't give a mintage for, but those aren't even on my radar.
I was hoping to finish it and then post it. I have been planning the same with my 20th century Greek set. I only need two coins. That's the one I'm closest on.
Do you need a 1959 cinco centavos, or a 1984 +'85 c100. I found them the other day with a bunch of other foreign coins. I'll give them to you if you need them.
No, thanks for the offer but those are pretty common. The ones I need now you are unlikely to find randomly.
