Does he still have any of those Kennedy dimes? I've been trying to get one of those for years. They don't come up on Ebay too often, and when they do they go for moon money.

I love it. $35 worth of coins for the bargain basement price of $200? I bet those aren't available anymore.

Here in VB, there was a guy running the same ad for months for his coin collection. It simply said coin collection - $90. So I finally clicked the link to check it out. He had 2 Indian heads, a 1932 quarter, a 1996 Kennedy Half, and 11 bicentennial quarters. For $90. And claiming all but the IH were 90% silver :D

I emailed him to let him know why he had no responses, and that he had roughly $11 worth of coins, and only the '32 was silver. He did not reply, but instead edited his ad and lowered his asking price to $40.

Craigslist isn't the appropriate place for purchasing or selling bullion. There are reputable dealers for exactly that purpose. Craigslist is more a low ticket buy/sell or rent an apartment service in most places. GO to a reputable bullion dealer--there are so many out there.

That may be true in some places, but not everywhere.

Case in point: When silver was on the rise, and hit $40 an ounce, towards the end of 2010, I sold all my 1 oz. ASE bullions for $45 and ounce, and made a hefty profit, since I purchased all of them when silver was between $9-$15 an ounce.

You just have to do your homework and know what local B&M's and dealers are not only paying for silver coins, but also retailing them for.

Maybe you were offering a "better and more fair deal", but so what? It does not matter what local dealers are buying or selling at. The fact is he wanted more than you were willing to pay, and you wanted them for less than you could buy at a dealer. The amount does not really matter, does it? Was this guy under any obligation to sell to you, just because your offer may have been fair? You could not come to terms and it’s as simple as that. Do you realize how many people walk into B&Ms and walk back out with their coins because the dealer’s offer (fair or not) was for less than they wanted? It’s part of the game.

No one said or even implied that you were trying to rip this guy off, so why jump on the defensive? The simple fact is that there is no point in complaining, or calling this guy a clown just because a very minor deal didn't work out. If you want to use craigslist, the best advice I can give it to grow thicker skin. There will likely be a lot of people who are willing to waste your time and/or lie all in the hopes of getting a “better deal”… it just comes with the territory. Hopefully things will work out better for you in the future.

I disagree. It's possible craigslist could be a fine place for buying/selling bullion, but only as long as one is willing to deal with the nonsense today. The problem is that its now filled with dreamers, scammers, and newbies all hoping for that great score, and no longer worth the hassle to most. In years past though, CL was a great way to both buy and sell at very reasonable levels.

Yes, but there was a time when reputable dealers used craigslist too, and for all I know, maybe some still do. After all, it is free advertising.

Several of the local B&Ms near me list on craigslist, and the pawn shops do as well.

Hmm if you are looking for bargains people aren't going contact you offering to sell silver coins below melt, chances are rather than selling it to you they could sell it to a dealer or put in ebay. Only way you will find any bargain is hunt for listing where you have people selling off inheritance or trying to raise cash.

you have to pay tax on coins in california??

Yes, but sales tax is exempted on coins and bullion that cost $1,500 or more. From my experience, most dealers just ring you up for the price you see posted for the coin(s) even when they sell for under $1,500, anyway. Sometimes I get taken for a loop when a coin shop employee adds in sales tax. Read the rules on all states here: http://thecoinologist.com/sales-tax-state-by-state-breakdown/

I travel to Nevada a lot and its weird over there. You have to pay tax on bullion with a dollar value on it. Since ASE's and Maple Leafs and Philharmonics have values, you have to pay tax. However, You wouldnt have to pay tax on say...a Silver Libertad, or Onza. Ofcourse there is a treshold like the $1,500.00 in California but im not sure how much. Thats why I deal with Mom n Pop coin shop...where everything is cash n carry. You pay with credit or debit...and you will pay tax.

That's the way my dealers are. If I pay cash, there is no tax. If I pay with debit or credit, there is tax.

I had believed from the media that it was more of a place to look for "personal services" of the naughty vernacular.

you can buy/sell/trade almost anything on CL. The media only reports the negative stuff. I do a lot of trading on CL.

I think there's a bunch of useless ads and a bunch of like-minded people fishing for deals. If you're willing to sift through the ads you can find many good or better deals.

Often times it's just about getting there first when the deal happens to be a good one.

What I hate most about CL is how people are always so angry when you don't want to pay their inflated asking price. I have received a lot of hateful rants about my offers or counter offers. A simple no would suffice. It's not like i'm threatening them to sell me their items.
