It was recently mentioned by "foundinrolls" in another thread (US Coins / Kennedy Halfs (sic)) that "There are great doubled dies on 1964, 1964 D, 1966, 1967, and 1968 D kennedys. Also Doubled Die Reverses on 1965, and 1969 D to name a few easier ones to spot. On non-silver issues, Nice DDOs on 1971, 1971 D, 1972, 1972 D, and 1974 D. I've found nice DDRs on 1973 and 1973 D dated coins." I only have the redbook, which only mentions the 1974-D DDO and was wondering if anyone had experience or a reference as to what to look for to spot some of these double dies. Thanks!
The way I describe them is to look at the 1974 D and the rest look like that to a lesser degree. There is a 1972 D that is almost as strong. Bill

If you are asking what the other dates rather than the 1974 look like, then here is my contribution. This 1964 D was in my scrap silver pile for years before I noticed it. Go figure eh? Happy hunting, Michael
Agcollector...there are 1000's of Kennedy die varieties out there, a lot of them are minor but there are over 300 doubled dies listed in the CONECA listings, http://www.conecaonline.org/variety_listings.html. yes, I look at the motto first and work from there. on 1966 dated coins though i focus on the profile first as there is a nice DD that includes strong doubling of the profile.
Do we have any pics of a double profile on a half? Is it obvious? Is there a substantial difference between a double die and machine doubling? I must know! Thanks, Michael
There are 35 CONECA listings for the Kennedy 1966 doubled die obverse, 28 of them have doubling on the profile. Here are some photos (1st two) of the profile of a doubled die, and some photos (last two) of a machine doubled profile. Larry Nienaber
excellent pictures..you can see the die doubling as being a rounded duplication of the details. On the mechanically doubled piece, you can see the flat shelf-like doubling. Nice!!
Something else to watch for is doubling on the ear in the Kennedy series. During the early 90's you can commonly find profile and ear doubling, all machine doubling, I see a lot of them for sale, especially on Ebay (photos 1 and 2). The doubled die varieties on the ear are mostly found in the 1966 series (photo 3). Larry Nienaber
