Well, JimM recently turned me on to a website which helped me determine the difference between the 1970 small and large date cents. Now, I have one more problem I have to figure out in order to complete my penny album. How the heck can I tell what is what in the 82 pennies? Copper, zinc, large, small. So confusing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Well, the difference between zinc and copper cents is simply a weighing issue. According to redbook, the zinc cents weigh 2.5g while the copper cents weigh 3.11g. These images will help you with the date size: Large: Small: Both Together (Large/Small): I hope that answers your question! :smile
Thanks alot Richie! Luckily I have a good scale. Now I just need a better magnifier to see the tiny differences in dates.
The dates are actually pretty easy to see with the naked eye if you look closely. Both the 8 and the 2 are pretty "fat" near the bottom so they are fairly easy to without a magnifier (but, it is a good excuse to go out and buy a nice one  ).
large and small The 2 on the large date is closer to the rim than the 2 on the small date. Once you compare a couple it is not to hard to tell the difference.
i use my metal detector to tell if it's the zinc or not. it has a high tone and it says 10 cents for the copper and it says 1 cent with the medium tome for the zinc.
Thanks! I've been having the same problem, my books are empty in those 82 slots, this helps a lot! by the way, can anyone suggest a place to buy a decent scale or what kind of scale I should get?
