fairly high grade but as you can see corrosion and may have been cleaned. If it is a VDB would it have been worth the $70 i paid for it?
I think you paid a fair price for it. As far as VDB, I agree with FadeToBlack. Had it been VDB, there's no way you'd have gotten it at that price.
I do not see a VDB. Regardless, the obverse die does not match the obverse dies used to produce 1909-S VDB cents.
I initially thought the same, but the mintmark looks too tilted (for the low MM) for it to be a VDB IMO.
I have thought of removing some of the huge bubbles, to reveal what might be under it. but, i've been told by cointalk members "just leave it as it is!" not just this coin, other as well. that i have posted. it is so tempting. but, i listen.
On the closeup of the bottom of the reverse it looks a little like a "D" but just to be sure I'd check it with a 10x loupe.
Looks to have AU detail, too bad about the environmental issues. I don't think it's a VDB either. Hey, $70 isn't too shabby for an 09-S with AU details.
It was on a Buy It Now! In his scan of this coin it appear to have a VDB under the corrosion, so, i did some thinking on the $70 price tag. If it is a VDB it would be great, although the higher grade 1909 S w/enviromental damage it would be great too. So, CLICK! it's mine now! LOL
When I see a coin like this on eBay, the first thing I think about is the possibility that it is a chinese counterfeit with intentional damage to cover up the tell-tale signs of the forgery.
