This coin is interesting because it mixes elements of Pomegranates (a tradition symbol of fetility and bounty), ships (trade), and in the background is the Barkafka Temple in the background
There is another one that has the same design, this one about the size of a half dime. A one Agora I think it looks better in brass. This would make a cool gold strike.
Also see this somewhat earlier issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herodian_coinage#Herod_Archelaus_4_BC.E2.80.936_AD Actually quite a few circulation coins from Israel use design elements from ancient pieces. Usually they "blend in" very well though and don't look like mere reproductions. (Maybe this topic should be moved to Coin Chat or the "World" forum?) Christian
I agree on both counts, that Israel blends in ancient motifs and this thread should be moved. At least Israel is doing it for the right reason, the motiff on the ancient coins were partially due to their religion, and as such the same reasons are valid today. This is much more acceptable to me than others who simply take designs from the past to profit today, (cough cough US MINT cough cough).
minus the greek. i think it is cool that the CNG has released that image under the GNU Free Document License
