Well, I didn't think it would ever be done, and I have to admit I'm kind of sad because of it, but I sold all of my duplicate wheat cents today. Yeah, I know, I figured on just hoarding them away until I died, but nevertheless, I did actually get rid of them. I just can't keep them here at home, and they're too hard to haul up to college and try to store there. I ended up with a very large quantity of them (well, for me, anyways) - 1,584 wheats, including 2 1909-p's, several teens and twenties, and a vast majority of the rest in the 40's and 50's. The good news about this is that my good friend Sean's birthday is coming up, and since he is a major civil war buff, I bought him a nice Civil War-era note (1861 $2 North Carolina, printed on reverse of $1,000 cancelled note) with the money I received from the cents. So, it goes to a good cause. And I suppose that's merely incentive for me to start going through more boxes of cents again! I can't help from feeling sad at having finally given them up.... I've had some of them for upwards of ten years now.... AJM
Did you sell them at a coin shop or to a person? I have a bag or 2 that I was saving until I retired and now I don't really want to stare at them under a scope. How are the coin stores in Flagstaff? I think there are 2 of them. I will be there next week to process some rentals and thought I might check them out if I have some time. I intend to relocate there in a year or 2 of all goes ok
I have a friend who is a coin dealer. He gives me good deals on things - though he is in Mesa, so whilest I am away at college in Flagstaff, I do not get to see him. I really don't use the coin stores in Flagstaff, mainly because they're overpriced and not as college-student-consumer friendly as down in Mesa here. I'll actually be moving back up there into my dorm on Thursday - I am really looking forward to getting out of the Phoenix heat!
Ok, thanks for the heads-up. I tend to find that many things are more expensive in Flag than other areas. We have rented to a lot of students, most going to NAU and one to Coconino CC. Good luck in college!
If you are going to get the most bucks from a coin collection, you will get it from dealers in a city where the coins shops charge a lot, not from where coins can be bought cheap! Probably it's better to join a coin club in the city where dealers over price their coins and offer them via the club's auction.
Well, he'll actually be receiving the note TOMORROW at his surprise dinner.... but I look forward to having made someone a happier person!
