box of nickels, found this war nickel to be strange... I can't tell if it's an error or just another case of PMD. Any thoughts anyone?

Looks like a lamination, very common for war nickels because of the mixture of the metals.

Over the weekend I was able to search two coin counter dime bags that my banks saved for me while I was out of town. The first bag was a skunk, but the second was a bit unusual:

    '54 and '63 roosies as well as '45, 2x '59, '60, and '64 80% silver canadian dimes.

Just got back from a big street fair around here, there were loads of vendors. Lots of antique/collectibles, and even a few tables with coins. I saw some silver for just about spot but I wasn't in the mood, but I did stumble across a table with a whole bunch of interesting stuff. I saw he had a bunch of blank planchets for cheap, so I picked them up.

Got a Quarter Blank, 2 Dime Blanks, a Nickel blank, a Penny Blank, and some brass thing that was marked "penny blank test piece", for $21 total. I had a few blanks from my days in the supermarket so this makes a nice addition to my collection. My boss who was with me (he's a big numismatist) said I got a great deal.

    How did I do?

I'm intrigued by the "penny blank test piece" thing, it's about the diameter of a nickel and looks like it's made of brass, and one side looks like it has a bunch of circular milling on it. Here's a pic:

Well, this is embarrassing.... I went to dump my ~$825 in dimes today. Dumping went fine, and I checked the reject tray throughout the dump, as usual. Along with the typical $4.10 in canadian dimes, I pulled out a 1964 roosie, heavily toned. Looks like one fell through the cracks! On the plus side, I now am fairly sure that this machine rejects silver. Not only will I be checking the reject tray on a more regular basis, but I am also confidant that this is the first silver coin that I've missed - I always dump at this machine.

What kind of machine? I'm curious because I want to buy a bag from my credit union an would like to know if it's with searching.

    Thanks.

It's a delarue quickchange counter, and it is in the lobby of the bank for customers to use. I know that their other (larger, faster) counters behind the teller lines do not reject silver, foreign coins, and a variety of other dime sized items such as tokens and buttons because I buy bags of dimes off of them to search.

Interesting, because my bank has one of those, and it DOES take silver.

Possibly a new revision of the unit? I'm not sure. It'd be an awfuly strange coincidence that the only coins rejected out of ~8250 dimes would be 41 canadian dimes and a single unmutilated silver roosevelt dime, but it's possible I just got lucky.

Could be. The one by me has been there forever.

There is another possibility - the dime could have been a reject from the customer immediately prior to me, and just happened to be silver. I did not check the reject tray before I started to dump.

Two boxes of dimes today yielded only a single '57 roosie:

And here's a shot of the one I think I missed over the weekend:

    Here! This one's for you.
    WOW!! What a day.
    Box #1 2x90% + 17x40% 19 1952D Ben Franklin
    Box #2 2x90% + 16x40% 18
    Box #3 4x90% + 11x40% 15 1962D Ben Franklin
    Box #4 1x40%

During box#3 I saw a Benji ender as I lifted it out of the box. When I saw it I told Always a Lady, Here, this one is for you. We saved it for last and it had a 1961D Ben Franklin plus a 40%. She was giggling because she has a thing for Benji's. I can't complain because my fave is any Walking Liberty.

    Great day with pics.
