I went to an old church lot and had some great success. A fun time out indeed.

That 2 cent piece is really nice considering it was in the ground so long. The reverse hardly shows any wear and I suspect what looks like worn areas on the obverse are partially the result of a weak strike.
I'm basing this on a few that I have where the horizontal stripes on the shield and the leaves to the left are not fully struck.
    I could be wrong though.

Excellent coin, nice detail and a strong "WE". This is Americas first coin with the motto "In God we trust", although the first mintage began in 1864. Nice.

Jim, metal detecting forum or not keep posting your finds. This is interesting stuff.

Also, I was wondering what you do with the things you find? Do you have a separate collection you keep them in? That would be a pretty interesting, and probably good sized, collection I'd think.

Wow, that 2 cent piece is in awesome condition. I would put that nice piece of copper at XF. Is the peroxide bath considered cleaning?

I keep the different things I find seperate. I have sold a lot of my better finds last winter due to my wife being in the hospital at that time and in need of money.

The stuff found is so fun. Yesterday I found a cool gold pendant with an english B on it. The odd ball stuff I find is just as fun as the old coins.

I'm sure its considered cleaning but I find em in the dirt anyway and thats all I ever do to the coppers I find is let the peroxide dissolve the dirt away. So whatever. The silver comes outta the ground like the picture shows. All I do with them is run them under the faucet to get the major dirt off of em. No scrubbing or anything. I'm sure thats cleaning to but whatever. I found em in the dirt. Jim

Either way, it wouldn't matter to me. It is an awesome looking coin and I would buy it. Looks a heck of alot better than the '66 I have and I didn't find it in the ground. Congratulations on a great find!

    Don't do the peroxide!!!

Properly conserved, that coin could be worth several hundred dollars. It appears to be in great shape under that dirt. Any 2cent piece with "WE" showing that clearly is definitely a great find.

What do you suggest Steve? Send it someplace to be conserved? Where would that be? They are already corroded by being in the ground I just like the way the look after the bath in peroxide. Jim

I absolutely hate NGC and TPG's in general, but I know that they offer a conservation service. Get in touch with them for an estimate. I have no idea what they might charge.
