I found something odd in the word "LIBERTY" on my 1957 penny. I'm assuming its the antics of someone with nothing better to do but I want to ask if anyone thinks it's something else? Thanks
There was a really big marketing ploy for these a few years ago its called a "bie" cent its just a die chip. Fairly common I used to have about a roll of them and had some from the 50s up til the 90s
Die Chip Thanks guys! I didn't think it had anything to do with the minting. It looked to me like someone tried some extremely small welding on that part on the coin. Thanks again!
Are we seeing the same thing on this coin? What is going on between the l and b in liberty? Is this a die chip or is the line going from his neck to the bottom rim of the coin what you are calling a die chip. Seems there are two errows with this coin. Almost looks like another letter added to the word liberty.
The die chip is between the "B" and the "E" making it the "BIE". I have probably a dozen of these in my junk jar. They're pretty common. Personally, I wouldn't pay anything extra because of it.
Now you're getting it. That's where the BIE comes from. I guess they should have been called LIBIERTY cents.
gooddealcoins & BIE's gooddealcoins sell these BIE coins in his own holders and in slabs from other TPG's. http://www.ebay.com/sch/goodealcoins/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984 He a trusted seller. I bought an IHC Snow variety from him and there were no problems. His prices seem a bit high for BIE die break coins but you must be the judge of that.
Nice find! From what I've been told this is most common between 1950 and 1960, and is caused by a weakness in the die that eventually cracked. Not extremely rare, but not acceptionally common. I would keep it for sure, I've found 3 so far, and I think they are a fun addiction to the collection! Definately an error in my opinion.
