Too bad 99% of coin collectors won't be able to afford it and majority of these will be purchased by bullion investors who couldn't care less about design. I know this is not going to happen in Israel, but it could have been nice if there were circulation releases of special/new designs, just like in Poland (2 zl.) or Russia (25, 10, 5, 2 rub.)
A lot of things are priced well over the market values, and there are always morons ready to purchase. I`m afraid this is the main marketing strategy in case of Israel Coins & Medals Corp.
Hmm, this is not a bullion coin. Israel only started its series of bullion pieces (face value 20 sheqalim) in 2010. Those coins or "coins" feature various sites in Jerusalem. This new issue, however, is part of the Unesco Cultural Heritage series. That series began in 2006 (Tel Aviv White City); the second one (Masada) was issued in 2009, and now comes Megiddo. Those Unesco coins are issued in three versions: 1 sheqel silver 14.4 g, 2 sheqalim silver 28.8 g, and 10 sheqalim gold. Thus no equivalent to the Polish 2 złote pieces, but at least the silver issues are not totally out of reach. "PS" - The Unesco Cultural Heritage series from Germany is similarly bad. Sure, mintages are much higher than Israel's very low figures, but you don't have a choice: Every issue comes as a half ounce gold piece only ... Christian
FWIW, I think that staircase is going down. Meggido, like Jerusalem, was a Solomonite royal construction and one of its main archeological features is the carved out water tunnel that reached beneath the city walls to provide the city with water when under seize. Its a big tourest thing to do.
That is very kind advise from you suh'. Thank Ya'll for the for the scarce constructive pardisulation.
