    Help with 1923 Peace Dollars

    hello,
i have a bunch of coins that were my fathers and being a huge numismatic noob and learning as i go i need to find out as much
as i can about these coins so i can get the proper value of them to sell so i dont get screwed or accidentally shaft a potential buyer.

i have several 1923 Peace dollars and they are in cardboard flips and written on the edge is 1923 UN
now does that mean uncirculated or unmarked? i think it is unmarked as there is no stamp above the tail.

but of course the biggest problem is not knowing how to grade a coin? no clue what makes a good coin, a really good coin, or a great
coin and how to put the correct value on it?

  3. 1923 is a common date for Peace dollars, especially with no mint mark (meaning that they were minted in Philadelphia). I am guessing UN stands for uncirculated. From what I can tell, each is worth silver value (currently $23.79). Now if they were high grade examples (tough to tell from pics) they could be worth more, but your Dad would have likely designated a grade if that was the case. Welcome to CT. TC

FYI, Morgan dollars and Peace dollars are two separate dollars. The Morgan dollars were designed by George T. Morgan and were struck from 1878 to 1904, and then again in 1921, the final year of issue.

The Peace dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, and was released in 1921, and ended in 1935.

thanks for the info, i have a bunch of Morgans also and thought these were the same but with the peace eagle on the back.
    i corrected my post.

topcat, i thought these looked pretty dang nice to me and would be a high grade, but that shows how much i know?
you can click on the pictures and it brings up a bigger image.

#4 looks to be the best of the bunch and could be worth about $50. The rest of them are probably worth about $30 each.

Actually, the obverse designs, though they both depict Lady Liberty, are distinctly different from one another too.

But most new collectors make the same mistake.

I got to agree with Chris. Coins 1, 3, and 5 are in pretty rough shape and worth about $30 each. Coin 2 looks to have nice luster but has some scratches (prob $35-$40). Coin 5 is the GEM of the bunch and is prob worth $50.

    Err, 4?
I'm digging 4, I just sold a ton of Peace dorras on the Bay & they typically trade for about spot, with small S premiums & premium for mintage under 5M, & of course Gemmy examples & toners.

would it be best to sell them individually or as a group or does it matter?

thanks for all your insights, i appreciate it!

If you can sell them locally, definitely individually. If you sell them online, it all depends on how cheaply you can ship them. Figure about $4-$5 per shipment including packaging and shipping. I would sell the 3 circulated coins as a lot, and the other two individually. Take really good high res pics for your potential buyers. Good luck.

Try 1, 3, & 5 as a lot if you want. But leave 2, & 4 to sell on their own. Do you have a 5 star seller rating, top rated seller? Those will help you pull stronger bids than someone with weak or no seller feedback.
    Hope this helped.

Morgandude11 As long as it's Silver, I'm listening

I would say just looking that none of them will bring in big money. I agree that #4 looks the best, and it is hard to tell exact grade as the picture is blurry. I'd guess it is AU. I'd say sell as a lot and ask $125 or best offer for the lot--certainly no more than that. The others are all definitely lower grade, and would bring $25-30 each. #4 MAYBE $50 max. They are very common date Peace Dollars.

you guys are awesome, i really appreciate the help and if you dont mind i have a lot more stuff i will ask for help with.

as for feedback i do have over 1000 positives and good five star ratings.
i also just ordered a usb micro-scope as i think that will help take some really good pictures as i cant figure out the macro on my camera to get good close up pics.
i will sell the three as a lot then and the other two seperately and see how it goes. when i get the microscope i will post some better pics here but im sure you guys
    are spot on the pricing.

    thanks again

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

After you get the microscope and get a little experience with it, start a new thread, tell us the brand and model number, and how well you like it, with pros and cons. This will be of great interest to many members.

good idea doug! i will do that but for the time being.... for those that cant wait, here is what i bought.
i did waste way to much time looking around searching for what seemed like a good model with a good price and a stand
and the one below is what i came up with. what i like is it has LED lights around the lens for its own lighting and you can
adjust the brightness which is cool. and then you can also adjust the magnification which should be handy, and the price
was fairly reasonable i thought. $40 shipped
they do have some for a few hundred bucks but i think they are aluminum and i dont need anything that fancy. i think the
picture taking part is pretty cool feature with these and if it works the way it sounds like it should i think a lot of people
will start using these, especially for coins, bills, and lots of other small items people want to see in high detail.

well i got the microscope and it sure looks like a nice unit but i had nothing but problems trying to install the drivers and software.
i would get the windows beep when i plugged it into a usb port but the install error messages were telling me to plug the device in
so no clue what was going on?
i emailed the seller and asked if i could return it so i hope i can get my money back? dont know if i should buy one from a different
seller or what? im bummed out as i wanted to use it really bad.

Did you read any of the 43 negs in his feedback?

Looks like 43 others had the same problems with items bought from him, that you're having.

    Item doesn't work!

But you have a 30 day money back from the seller, minus the shipping, so I would send it back.

i looked at the negatives but didnt see any for the usb microscope.
almost ten thousand sales in the past year and only forty three negatives. not really that high especially when you figure in
that some people leave a negative feedback at the drop of a hat.
