Is anyone aware of a Canadian nickel Voyageur $1 coin that has a wide rim? I have got such a coin, which also has the beeading placed quite a way in from the edge of the coin. Its appearance looks like it has come out of a Proof-like set & been spent.

How this particular coin ended up over here in New Zealand,I don't know.

    I can't post photos,as I don't yet have either a scanner or a camera.I also don't have a printer either.

I don't recall ever seeing a piece ID'd as a Chinese forgery of a Canadian dollar, but wide rims are a common hallmark of the Chinese replica/fantasy factories. [IMG]

Twiggs, thank you for trying to answer my question.I think it is one that was broken from a Proof or Proof-like set & spent. The wide rim is very distinctive,as is the slightly Proof-like field.

We get a lot of the Canadian nickel Voyageurs turning up in bulk lots of Canadian currency coins.I take out the Voyageurs in addition to any 50c. coins & any commemorative coins.Silver coins do sometimes turn up,&,yes,I pull them out.

Twiggs, mine isn't silver. It is the usual nickel composition that was used between 1968 & 1986.Strangely,I found it in a bulk lot of Canadian currency coins that my boss had bought late last year & had forgotten about until Monday, when he found it.

All business strike 1977 nickel dollars have a very wide and square rim, that includes all three variety types. The only year whereby you may see examples of wide and narrow rims would be 1974, but the difference is hardly worth noting. Here is an example of a 1977 business strike from my collection.
