Silver Jefferson Dollar Error

I thought you should know that I took a sharp knife to another gold presidential dollar, they are silver under the top layer. I will be keeping the coin in a 2x2 until it is looked at someone with more experience, but presidential dollars are not gold colored throughout, there is a clad gold over silver color core.

Believe what you like but the Golden Dollars have a pure copper core with clad layers of manganese brass.

 

This should be a great surprise to the US Mint. They think they are using Manganese brass clad onto a pure copper core.

What does the edge of the coin look like?

For those of you that do not recall, in early 2008, some quarter planchets were used on the Monroe Dollars. The coin wrapper disclosed this to the US Mint and all were confiscated. Presumably, none made it to circulation and presumably, since they were confiscated, they would be illegal to own.

I just wonder if perhaps this Jefferson ended up on a random quarter planchet?

The edge and its weight would tell.

 

Its been 10 days since you first posted, have you gotten an exact weight for it yet? I still say its plated.

 

Sure you don't have a "Platinum Plated" coin? ...worthless.

 

If it was struck on a quarter planchet I think it would be rather obvious. the quarter planchet is noticeably smaller in diameter, harder, and nearly 30% thinner. A press set to strike the thicker softer planchet would never produce a full strike on a quarter planchet or squeeze it out to the full diameter of the dollar coin. Those rims would be missing somewhere and the strike would be weak.
