    If you do feel inclined to put a toned coin (AT or otherwise) under your SEM, there are a lot of us who would love to see what you find.

    For starters, it would be nice to see quantitative confirmation of the relationship between Ag2S layer thickness and color.

    On a heavily toned MS coin, it would be nice to see the interplay between flow lines and toning-layer thickness and structure.

    It would be nice to see before-and-after pictures of a coin that gets dipped for varying durations.

    Ah, if only I could go back to school for materials science... :)

    Yeah, don't do it, I have a BS in Materials Science & Engineering. Metals are cool, but polymers and ceramics suck eggs.
