Hey guys, I am used to going to the bank and taking $50 out in the form of bills. However, since I am starting to collect coins now, I thought maybe I'd get that money back in the form of quarters, etc. My question is: say if I want to get halves (if you can still do those?) or even rolls of quarters/nickels/dimes/etc. will my bank let me do that as an option (the rolls) or will I get charged an extra fee for taking out the money as rolls and not bills? I thought getting rolls of coins would be a great way to start collecting.
It depends on the bank. If they have the rolls in stock, they don't always, they'll probably give them to you at face value. But many banks charge their customers if they have to order the coins.
Alright, thanks GDJMSP. I also have one other question maybe someone can answer: how much is a roll of halves worth? I'm assuming it would be $20 since a roll of quarters is worth $10 but I'm not sure.
Roll of halves is $10 face value with 20 coins in the roll. They are the short fat rolls that the tellers never like to carry.
Oh and as far as fees, I have noticed that if you do not have an account at the bank you are getting rolls from they will charge you a fee, but if you are a customer they are normally pretty good to you.
I've never been charged a fee for not being an account holder, though I have opened accounts at the couple of banks I usually get my rolls/boxes. Seemed to be the right thing to do after those folks have been so nice.
The trick is not so much getting the rolls, but turning them back in after picking through them. I picked a bank specifically because it has a coin counting machine, so I can deposit a bag of loose change without having to roll it. This is harder to find than it might seem, but worth it.
I am an account holder at the bank I'm thinking of going to, so I guess from how you guys talk - I shouldn't have a problem at all. I'm not sure if they have a coin counter or not, because I plan on getting probably $10 in pennies (yikes I know, but it will be a good time-waster) and once I pick out any good ones I'm pretty sure I'm not going to actually want to roll them all back up. Is it a good or bad thing to let banks know that you're a coin collector when getting rolls? Is it a touchy subject for them, do they feel "used"?
Depends... some tellers are really cool about it and even offer me tips if they are collectors too, other times you get someone who's having a bad day or something and they tell you something along the lines of "oh well then you need to go somewhere else to get these coins and stop wasting my time" so I'd read the person well before saying anything.
Alright, thanks again CoinDude. Since I'm kind of new to the collecting thing, when I go to my bank this Friday what kind of rolls and how many should I get? I'm looking to take out $50 all-in-all. I wouldn't be surprised if you guys recommended penny rolls since they're inexpensive and there are still wheats/steels in circulation. But besides the pennies, what else should I get? Should I try my luck with halves? What else?
Its great to past time when your bored. My bank charges for rolls but only for more than 10 rolls and then at .10 cents a roll every roll above 10 but im a nice guy treat everybody with respect and you know yes mam , no mam thank you , nice weather were having the whole 9 yards so they overlook the charge above 10 rolls for me . You will be amazed at the stuff you will find. I put together a complete jefferson nickel set ( well minus the 50-d and a couple of the silver war ) as well as a complete lincoln mem. set not bad on the rest but when you get down to the dates in silver they get pretty sparse. All in all its fun and passes time.
I prefer halves since they don't circulate much and you can find some really good condition ones, as well as silver, without too much trouble. On the other hand, $50 in halves is only 100 coins, whereas $50 in nickels (for example) is 1000 coins so you have a better chance of finding something interesting since you're going through 10 times the coins.
I have never had a bank charge me a fee for rolls, some banks just do not have extra rolls to give out and most don't even carry halfs or so they say.
I love when they stare right into your eyes and just say "no". I've had some nice ones that ask the other tellers if they have what I'm looking for. Sometimes the other tellers overhear me and say "I've got some over here!"
OK, I broke down and tried it.. Yesterday I went to the local bank and said. Hello, I would like to purchase some rolls of Halves please. The teller looked at me like I have three heads. She said she didnt know what I was talking about but to "hold on" She went to the manager and asked, They didnt have a Halve in the bank! I got a do they still make them? Sigh.... Just when I was going to jump on the proverbial band wagon too...
Don't give up! Most banks will give them out even if you're not a customer, so if there are other banks in the area you could try those. Or, ask your bank to order a box from the federal reserve / brinks / fargo-loomis, etc...
Hey guys, I'm going to the bank tomorrow, here's what I have in mind: - 20 rolls of pennies ($10 worth) - 5 rolls of nickels ($10 worth) - 2 rolls of dimes ($10 worth) - 1 roll of quarters ($10 worth) - 1 roll of halves ($10 worth) Does that sound good? Might I have any luck with anything besides possibly the halves pennies (since so many old wheats and whatnot are in circulation)? If not please give me your suggestions before I go there! Thanks in advance.
I think that's a good idea, to try out all the denominations. That way you get a feel for what you like to look through. As to what you'll have luck with, it's always random but odds are if you find anything interesting it won't be in dimes or quarters.
