Treated myself to my September purchase early--two more toners from Shane. Totally addicted in a good way!
I was after that 01-o. It is MS63 and was sitting at 115 nearly to the end of the auction, where I considered bumping it 10 clams or so to add it to my blue toned O collecton. Morgandude and one other bidder pushed well past that mark. That is one thing that worries me with going after these toners.... you may often find yourself bidding the coin well past what the majority of the bidders will pay while bidding against only one other person. Remove that person from the mix, and the coin could have been yours for roughly half what it ended at... which worries me on the sell side, when it comes that time... and sooner or later, that time "Always" comes. I went wild on a proof half he had up for sale a few months ago,, coin was sitting at 150 with 2 seconds left and I put in a "give it to" bid of 300 figuring no one was that crazy... someone was. The next highest bidder in that action (other than me) bid 145, and the winner paid 310 for this coin. Assuming I'm not around when it comes time to sell that coin, I think his or her odds of selling it for 200 will be challanging, my guess is that they will see a huge loss on the coin when it comes time to sell. Be careful boys and girls.
Only takes 2 people that want something to drive the price crazy, I no longer watch coins end. I set my max and leave it at that, if i were to watch all the coins end I'd be paying way more than I want to.
I think that basically I did what I wanted to do---I set out to buy the 1901o and the American Eagle toner (which is a MS 67 PCGS). I set my limit and walked away--was willing to pay $400 for both of them, because I thought they were incredibly beautiful. After rethinking what I wrote on another thread about a rainbow toned coin that Shane was selling on consignment, I will admit I was wrong to say it was insanely overpriced, as beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. My limit was what I was willing to go, given that I am assembling a personal registry PCGS/NGC slab set of toners that are Morgans, any other dollars, Franklin and Kennedy halves, and some other miscellaneous toned coins in mid to high MS grades. So far, I have a bunch of them, and have done well with the acquisitions. Was there a significant premium for the Morgan 1901o? Yes, it went for twice market, given that a super eye appeal "white coin" would go for about $90-100 in 63, and about $140-160 in 64. So, I paid double what its market value would have been, had it not been what I consider a work of art. It is totally subjective, and since I got both coins for under my maximum bid, I have no issues with it.
Oh, I think you are very qualified. Your toned coins are magnificent, and if someone doesn't think so--that is their problem. I have seen your NGC registry set, and it is fabulous!!
1901-o blast white morgan dollars with plenty of white eye appeal go for less than $70 in PGCS and NGC holders all the time,, many for less than $60. Your premium was more in line with 3x imo. She's a darlin' coin still and will no doubt look fantastic within your set. My primary point was not to take away from the coin in any regard other than the likelyhood of return at the time of it eventual sale, be it by you, or your heirs. That said, I've never met a toner fan that was worried about losing money, in fact it seems that most embrace the idea as purley off topic and out of scope if collecting toners... but I don't.
You can definitely find 1901o coins in MS 63 for less for sure. $60 or 70 gets you a fugly one, with bag marks galore and little to no eye appeal. I had those kind as a kid, and in my 20s and 30s. Really pretty ones are around $100---ones that are gorgeous. So, I pad double for it at $197. I've e-mailed pictures of it to some friends, and have already had offers that would give me considerable profit over that, as they are tone collectors for years and years. It is a specialized market. I have no intention of selling, so no issue there. Thinking about a NGC registry, as they accept PCGS coins in registry sets, and I am long time members of both PCGS and NGC.
Really pretty ones are around $100---ones that are gorgeous I've never seen an untoned or non-PL MS63 blast white that I'd attach "gorgeous" to... I guess if you did find one, that lacked the associated bag marks you mention it would be worth buying and resubmitting for a higher grade. Maybe we should say, mis-graded MS63's go for $100 ; ) Which btw, the one above appears to be imo.. looks 64 to me just looking at the details.
Here's a pretty MS 63 1901o:http://www.ebay.com/itm/1901-O-Morg...Individual&hash=item2a15e19863#ht_1995wt_1180
Too baggy,, I like this one better: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item2c6773a853&item=190714194003&nma=true&pt=Coins_US_Individual&rt=nc&si=QdmqwI3EF1dz20iAkek1FMC4hhA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc or even better: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...3EF1dz20iAkek1FMC4hhA%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I agree with this sentiment. For me, untoned Morgan Dollars don't reach gorgeous until the premium gem grades. A blast white MS65 just doesn't do it for me.
I had a 68 that would have knocked your sox off--sold it to get my 89cc but it was gorgeous. An 1888.
I sold both of my 68's. As impressive as they were, the price tag kinda sours the experience. For my money, I would much rather have MS67's in the Morgan series. I only have one at the moment. A gorgeous toner with semi-prooflike surfaces. A myriad of greens & blues with a blast white reverse.
