Obviously people use the site, or it would be out of business, I would say its mostly uninformed people that see the add in a magazine or newspaper and think they're getting a good deal.
Since these are in "average circulated condition" (which means junk silver), a fair price would be 3 for $36. Littleton is blatantly overcharging for these... or maybe their crystal ball shows silver rising to astronomical levels in the near future.
But they are America's Favorite Coin Source Trusted Since 1945. All you have to do is read the web page. Everything on the Internet is True...............
Even though they are overpriced, people buy from them. It could be uneducated collectors thats just starting out or people who don't know the market price. But I bet there are enough people like that out there that keeps them in business.
Preston always sees their ads in the coupon booklets of the Sunday paper. I try to detour him from wanting to buy that crap. Glad my hunch was right.
I guess one could add many companies as "ripoff" if they do not supply items at the person's expected minimal cost. Lexus, Apple, Mercedes, Starbuck's, etc. all supply at a cost well above what a minimum a person can obtain the same for elsewhere, but they seem to have survived very well, because millions do not feel they were a ripoff. Many use Littleton as they like the service and the product. Littleton has many pricing and PR problems, but I have seen few complaints that a person didn't get what they ordered or signed up for. They do seem to have consistent and honest grading, and most problems come from people who do not read all of what they are signing up for. Can you get a specific coin cheaper someplace else? Yes, but how many times have you read on the forum of people yelling "foul!!" about the coins they receive from eBay or elsewhere? A buyer has every right to expect the maximum for the minimum, but the conundrum is that so does any seller except your grandparents By the way I do not have any Apple,Lexus,Mercedes products nor do I drink at Starbucks unless it is with someone who wants to do so, but even then I wouldn't say ripoff. So are starbuck's coffees, but you are talking about identical products. My point is that there are other "I-Pad" and "IPhone" clones similar, equal, or better, that can do the same activity or more, and cost 1/2 as much. No one forces you to buy Littleton's coins, but you consider it a "ripoff" based on your personal expectations. Perhaps you prefer Apple products for esthetic reasons, and that is fine, it is your money. Many people who are uninformed about coins and grading do buy from Littleton, and yes when they go to sell them , they are dismayed at what they get offered, but so are many who buy from "cheaper sources" as they could well be problem coins or fakes. I just think it is unfair to call them a "rip off" just because of their pricing structure which is in open view. Cheapest is often counterproductive, IMO. Jim All
You can add Home Shopping Network and Govmint.com to this list also, As mentioned above, they seem to be doing great business, most probably due to people who are uninformed or people who like the service they provide. I think the appropriate label for them would be "overpriced", as "ripoff" most often means not getting something that is paid for.
SO OVER PRICED, my grandparents bought an uncirc. Quarters atb and state and some had ugly gunk I'll try to post a pic later
