How do you store your collection?

I'm looking for some advice and possibly picking up a method that is currently better then mine idea. Right now my notes are scattered all over the place as I collect both U.S and world notes. The size difference is giving me a headache as I have multiple boxes. Nothing is in order as I try to organize by the size of the note. Also I have been buying different sized holders, the price of the holders are not that cheap.

So, I'm wondering how do others store and protect their collection? Looking to better my storage and protection method.

Okay, first, I put the good stuff on display. Here, for instance, is my Dances With Wolves frame (still wanting a McPherson to truly get the full effect, but you get the idea)...

Now those things I don't put on display, I put them in Lighthouse Grande albums with clear pages of 4 or 3 compartment height (I might get a few 2 compartments for extra tall notes like a couple of the Greek ones, plus they fit slabs perfectly).

I have two albums with a mix of the 3 and 4 clear pages. Wonderful stuff, excellent quality...

Thanks Mec2. I like the idea of the album, do you keep the notes in pick number order? And nice collection you have.

I keep a mix in there, all my Greek are together but I also have large size US in front, then obsoletes, and at the back are my Colonials (until I get them all done and frame them together), in order of year (and when necessary, size, but almost always going in order).

I store mine in rigid holders or TPG holders and keep them in a safe or SDB at the bank. :)

MEC2 - I really like those albums you posted and have been wanting to get some type of display album for my notes.

A question: How many of the 3c/4c currency holder pages would you estimate that you can "comfortably" fit into one of those GRANDE currency albums?

Also, have you (or anyone) ever used one of these small currency albums? If so, how do you like it? How many additional sleeves do you think you can fit in it?

Oh... and where is the cheapest place to buy them? :)

I got mine off eBay. I would estimate 50 pages is the optimal number you would like to put in them, it could likely hold closer to 60-70 but the weight I think is too much and it becomes unwieldy. I have over 40 in one of them now.

Nice thing is... you can always just buy another book, and migrate pages back and forth as needed. That's what I've done, and it's worked well.

Most of mine are sleeved and reside in a SDB at the bank. The notes I keep at home can usually be found displayed in all sorts of inventive ways. These are on the fence in the back yard so I can see them while throwing horse shoes and drinking beer.

Pretty interesting idea... on the darts. Steve, have you ever hit the bullseye with one shot? :D

Looks like I'm going to get some pages and a binder. The pages are easy to find, the album, I will have to look on the internet.

Oh, and I got another foreign note. Its a weird size and I have no idea how to store it. Its basically a large size US dollar but more wider. Anyone know any holders for these?

I have some notes like that... usually antique notes. I use the two-pocket pages for some and for the really large one I use a standard page protector. You can get them from Staples. They are meant to hold an 8.5 11.5 piece of paper but for large notes they work just great!

I really do not like those smaller currency albums that flip right to left, the notes cannot help but bend with every turn...

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to say anything bad. I would be scared of damaging a note.

This is alittle off topic but this question is for mec.....on those pictures above of your chief and buffalo while viewing them i noticed on the buffalo top right corner there appears to be a darken/blackish stain of some kind....is that on the note itself/what is that?It doesnt look like its on the glass. Just curious

That's where some helpful person put a little bit of tape and it denatured the paper (JEEZ old tape sucked.... It's what made that note affordable for me though, otherwise it'd have been another couple hundred out of pocket. Where it is on the note didn't bother me, so I went for it. Notes with a distraction like that you have to be careful of, because there are some that I could never live with because they are so obvious. Where this one is - I honestly never really even notice it.

Thats what i thought it was but wasnt sure....on a note like that it may be worth having it professionally cleaned if it would come off.
