Zach you seem to have a good eye for deals on ebay. To me this is not one of them. That AT looks blatenly doctored. I personally don't find the toning attracticve.
I think you guys are being too harsh on that coin. While I don't think it will slab, I bet it is attractive in hand, AT or not. Zach, I would like to photograph that coin. PM me if you are interested.
Eye appeal or not, it's a damaged coin. It's worth melt. Sure, someone may pay for the eye appeal....there's a sucker born every minute.
I don't consider an uncirculated Washington Quarter to be worth melt. If you don't want to pay a premium for the toning, that is fine. But one quick dip and you have a bright white BU Washington Quarter again. The AT (if that is what it is) does not destroy all numismatic value IMO.
The guy says he had the coin in his collection for awhile which means the color has stayed the same, which im assuming is a good thing. I read on your on listing it means the AT is stable.
To me the stability of an AT coin simply means that the AT was achieved by the use of gas & temperature rather than the application of a chemical to the surface of the coin. The gas method once finished eliminates the toning source and arrests further toning. The application of a chemical to the surface of a coin will cause the toning to continue to advance unless the chemical is completely removed/neutralized which is not easy to do.
Agreed. The majority of the chemicals used to artificially tone a coin can be neutralized with a baking soda and warm water solution. Most...
Then the only logical explanation is that the coin doctors aren't diligent in their neutralization techniques.
To be fair, I purchased an AT coin or two when I first started. I will also admit, that I find the eye appeal on this guy extraordinary. Hippocratic much G? I can't forget about this gem either. I'll send you these for a glamour photo session!
Yeah, but who's the sucker? The one who collects tarnish based on the standard of whether or not it's eye-appealing to him or the one who's conditioned to collect it based on arbitrary standards neither he nor anybody else for that matter can define much less consistently apply? Think about it, gbroke. Give it the old goin' over.
