Can anyone tell me when the next coin show is in Knoxville TN.? I am going to try and sell my 1878 8tf PCGS MS63 Vam 20! I think I would get more for it at a coin show, but I am hoping there is a show soon, because I need the money soon. Hope this was not out of line, but times are hard and this is my favorite coin.
I think that you would get more for it on eBay than at a show. Most dealers are not going to know much about VAMs, they just don't have the time. Go to Coinshows.com for info on an upcoming show.
Maybe you can post picture of coin here, and sell to someone here of Cointalk, get better price, coin goes to good collector
Thanks everyone:high5: Guess what..... I did not have to sell it! I made a call to a local coin dealer, and spoke to a VAM collector/expert. He told me how the only Vams that carry a premium were this date and that date, naming off about three....3?.....yes three and only three. I replied huughuum, I'm sorry I said it's an 1878 8tf PCGS MS63 VAM 20, and that is in the HOT 50 collectables. He said, Well I have heard of the TOP 100 , but not the HOT 50.?:goofer: So I sold some of my over re-searched mercury dimes, for just over the silver value, and made the money my family needed I refuse to sell this piece of historical Art to an Ediot. I have spent waaaaay to much time looking through my microscope, taking digital photo's through the microscope, Editing them to size on my Computer, Posting the pictures on this very Forum, And having one of the best experiences of my life take place on that thread from the input of people that have earned their knowledge of Coins through many hours of DETAILED RESEARCH! I will not sell this Coin to anyone who hasn't paid their DUES:thumb:
Sounds like this particular piece is definately the centerpiece and model of your collection! Congratulations on finding a way out of selling this coin-it sounds like a dandy! I'm glad it all worked out for you, and I wish your family the best!! Bill

This was a dealer that is totally ignorant (my guess) at best. My opinion is that if you are this ignorant, you might as well sell vegatables as coins. Maybe he was a real old timer. Just doesn`t get it that markets change. Certain VAMS (dozens of VAMS) sell in the 4 figure range. Some in the 5 figure range. I steal rare VAMS off these ignorant old-timey dealers all the time.
When I hear the Truth preached like this, It makes me want to speak in Tounges....( I see my Tie, You see my Tie)...IseemytieyouseemytieIseemytieyouseemytie....
I would love to own an 1878 Vam 20. It truly has some of the most prolific doubling in all the Morgan series. I would buy your coin without hesitation.
I suspect the dealer may have been trying to rip you off. That is a desirable VAM, and if you ever do sell, I believe a well advertised ebay auction would be your best bet.
"so sad when you have to depart from a favorite coin" Just departed from an NGC MS65 1885-CC. Oh well. I paid $1150 for it 4 years ago, it just went for $1225 on ebay. Oh well. Looked close to 66. Pure white, really nice coin. Tens of thousands equally as nice. It paid for an 1878 7/8 VAM 32. Really, Really Rare. Like 50-75 known on the planet. At most, NO MORE than 100 known. In any condition. Despite what old-timey dealers and collectors say to downgrade VAMS, they have a proven price history spanning 10-15 years. VAMS are not a fad.
