I picked up this 1812 Bust half today thinking it was an 2/1 . Now Im a bit perplexed. I have found a few good diagnostics that point me in the direction of this being a Large 8 2/1 variety. & I really need a second opinion. Hell I could be totally wrong but thats why Im asking for your help. The strike is off center & what appear to be rim dings are actually the lettering on the edge comming over. Since it is an offcenter strike for the lack of a better term : do you think that may be throwing off the die cracks in proportion to the diagnostic in the book? Secondly could this coin have been struck at the begining of the die fatigue that causes the breaks to show up ? I am only wondering this since the breaks are so weak ? Either way thanks for taking a few moments to look at it. There are more pics- so any of you Bust Junkies let me know if you need to see any other areas -Bud
It looks like you've got an O-105, double segment over last A, large dot on crossbar 5, and die crack on obverse. A very nice example in about VF-30/35 condition. Wish I had it B
i dont know anything about bust coins but the wear and color on that praticular coin is very appealing to me out of curisty what did you pay for it? if you dont mind sorry for the bad spelling
I wouldn't call it an off center strike---if it was the back would be off just as much as the front...and its not. So it would be a MAD...or mis-alined-die strike...no added value IMHO. Speedy
You gotta remember, things were much more rudimentary back in 1812. While this half is off-center/misaligned there just was not the quality control standards modern minting facilities have. Close counted... Take care B
The color on the main pictures is actually off , due to the fact that it is a scan. The other close ups are a bit better in color due to the Halogen light I use at such a close up. Although I think it comes off less brown than the close ups. As for what I paid ..... I have to say I got a good deal- I only paid 70$ for it
