i bought a copy of the 5th ed, volume 2 at b&n yesterday(and was surprised to learn they carry a lot of whitman albums as well) and im wondering if i need the previous 4 editions. are all the earlier editions different, or is the 5th just updated with new error and variety additions, but still contains all previously listed coins? and do they have one just for small cents? thanks.

  3. Volume 1 has the small cents (Half Cents to Jefferson Nickels). I do not think you need earlier editions, as these are updates. They do sometimes remove varieties/errors that have little or no collector interest, but you would likely not care about them anyway. TC

thanks. i suspected that volume 1 would be the small cents, but they didnt have one at b&n. i will order one online. b&n killed me with a $40 price tag on v.2. and i noticed some of the entries said they would be removed in the next edition.

Just stick with the fifth edition Volume 1. It is just updated from the earlier editions, some new material added. And with the fourth edition they changed the catalog numbering system so the earlier volumes don't even have the same numbers as the latest one.

the earlier editions include the later stuff.

the 5th is all you need, for now, Vol 1 & Vol 2.

ALMOST always you only need the current editions of any such book like this. There are times where reprints are worst quality, or where a subsequent edition dropped out a lot of valuable information, but such occasions are pretty rare.
