I don't think that's a 70 SD. For one, the LIBERTY is not mushy, which while that does not guarantee it is a SD, its absence definitely insures that it's NOT a SD. The alignment of the 7 doesn't appear to line with the 0, another way to check whether it's a SD or LD. Hope that helped! -CB
The top of the 7 has to be equally as high as the 9 and the 0, and I don't believe yours is a small date. Just a normal one. Welcome to Coin Talk!
So I have 2 of them and they look different. I think one is a Small Date, but I keep getting them mixed up. Here is the other one. I wasn't able to get this one as good.
That coin looked like a 1973 D when I blew it up. The 2nd one pixilated when I enlarged it and although I cannot say for certain, I suspect it is NOT the 70S small date. The PUPs (pick up points) I go by are first, the loop of the 9 is much more closed on the small date. Second, the 7 is so much higher than the normal coin. and Third, the LIBERTY weakens from the L to the Y. By that I mean the strength of the lettering fades. All might be strong, depending on the strike, but the L will be stronger than the Y, almost as if the die were tilted. Good luck searching !
That's a large date. Here's a diagram to help distinguish the two dates. This is the large date 70S. Notice the top of the 7 is below the top of the 9. Also, the hoop of the 9 is pointing at the mint mark. This is the small date 70S. The top of the 7 is even with the top of the 9. The hoop of the 9 points back towards the 7.
