I have this proof Kennedy half dollar. Can someone say what caused this and is there any extra value--is it considered an error coin?
    Thanks for any information.
Please excuse my mistake in post title--"coin"--not "coim":)

I can't say what caused it, but I can see the detail of the hair within the divot. Sorry to say I think it was caused after the coin left the mint. Let's see what the others think about it.

IMO, not an error, but post mint damage. That coin took a hit during its travels.

I took the coin directly from the proof set so that was all it "traveled' in.
Also, the inside of the bump looks like the rest of the surface of the proof finish.

Likely gremlins, they carry little hammers ya know. I saw that in a documentary once... or maybe it was bugs bunny.

BTW, here is one of my uncirc halves in the plastic:

    I
    'd guess pre-package/post-strike.... by gremlins

I will dig the coin out this weekend and take some better photos--definitely not gremlin damage:)

Can you also get a shot of the reverse of the coin adjacent to the mark on the front.

OK. It did not come out of the dies like that. If it had, there would be thousands more of these. The dent in JFK's head was cause by something that happened after minting.

Didn't that happen in Dallas on November 22, 1963?

Hey guys this is probably a strike thru . this is what happens when something get's between the coin planchet and the coin dies. It get's struck into the coin then falls out of the coin after it leaves the dies. I have two truely awesome state quarters here somewhere and I have looked for a year for them and can not figure out where I put them. they have probably a hundred of round struck thru areas on the reverse side. I called them the fireworks coins , the struck thru areas started out narrow and widened out at the top of the coins. they looked like sunken in bubbles and both coins are identical. If I ever find these back I promise I will post them on here.

I was wondering how long it was going to take.

How would the hair detail be under the strike through? It would have had to happen between the first and second strike of the proof. I'm not trying to argue with you, I just don't know that much about errors.

I didn't know that the hair detail was inside of the sunken in area. In this case it is mostlikely a retained die chip. when a chip first breaks loose from a die it will raise out on the die and make sunken in areas that looks similar to a strike thru. I'm almost certain your coin is a mint error but I don't know for sure how much it is worth. I would say around 40.00 since it is a proof.

Looks like PMD. I know it may not look like it in hand but it really can't be anything else. jmo//

Sounds reasonable, thanks for the information, always nice to learn something new.

BTW, I'm not sure if the hair detail is there, but it looks like it is in the first image if you blow it up.

This is a good place to learn about coins for those that are interested in learning. I wish I would have had a computer a long time ago. when I first got interested in error and variety coins about all I had was a few magazines to look thru and mail order books from sellers like Mr. Weinberg and a few others.

Fred is a friend of mine and his knowledge is incredible, but his time is limited when it comes to being able to teach. I've collected for almost thirty years, but recently, I've been much more interested in errors.
