That article made me cry a little "Rare silver dollar" tear!!! It's so sad to hear about perfectly good coins being ruined by an intense washing!
Here's a good link with video. Let's hope he sticks to the clad circulated stuff! http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Coin-Washer-Cleans-SF-Hotels-Money-128219193.html
Sure they just do clad now because that is all that is in circulation. But they have been doing it since 1934 which means that they were doing it to all the silver coins, Mercury dimes, standing quarters, walking halves, Morgan and peace dollars etc for over 30 years.
Same here; the ft.com page is blocked. Have had similar cases before, e.g. when you click a story link at Google News, you can view/read the story - if you try it from elsewhere, some gatekeeper will stop you. And yes, a while ago I read a similar story. From Dec 2010; some nice photos too. http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Coin-washer-keeps-Westin-St-Francis-change-shiny-2518445.php Christian
