1890 cent

    Hi all I have a question I hope some one can help me w/. I have a 1980 cent, it has a large rim on it, (it almost looks like a train wheel) I have several other 1890's & they dont look like this one. I cant seem to find any info on it. if any one can help please do. please feel free to e-mail me(emtgirl74@yahoo.com) & I'll send you a pic of it. I dont really care if it's a fake or if it's real I just need info on it.(it's driving me NUTS:goofer: ) thanks for any info.....Michelle

    sounds like this coin has been "spooned"

    "Spooning" is taking a spoon or something similar and using it to strike a coin along its rim. Do this enough and the coin shrinks in diameter while gaining a thicker rim.

    I now that spooning was used by the World War 2 service men. But did this practice go back as far as the 1890's? I would say that the coin may have been some sort of encased lucky penny.
