I have an oportunity to purchase a 1995 W, 5-coin set from my LCS, the set looks great has everything with it, even the gold foil. I looked at each coin with a magnifing glass and from what I can see everything looks great. Im looking on E-Bay and completed listing have this selling fromm 5200-6900. What Im thinking is most sets on E-Bay probaly have been looked over and if the silver eagle wont grade these are the sets they are selling. I know for a fact this set was owned by an older gentleman and was never even looked at after it was bought. My question is I can purchase this for 6000-6200 cash. Lot of money, just alittle nervous doing it as Im not by any means even a decent coin grader. But I can see marks, milk spots, things like that and these coins have none. If I purchase them #1, Will they at least hold there value? And could I recoupe that money later? #2, If I were to send in for grading, is it worth my money and time. I realized what opions are like (yes, we all have 1). But I would like your thoughts on this, Thanks Jim
So you are asking if these coins are a good investment? Best answer is No. It is a gamble much like stocks. You buy them because you like them or you don't.
To a large degree most of the value in the gold coins is melt value, that's about $3k give or take. So the rest of the cost is for the ASE - another $3k give or take. Thing is these coins have been dropping for a long time from their previous high - and they still have some room to go, down. Will they ? Don't have a crystal ball. But I could see them dropping to $2500 easy enough, maybe more. Those coins held their value around $2k for quite a few years. They may be looking for that bottom. And if gold drops too ........... I think you get the point.
I'm in the same camp with Caz and Doug. Buy what you like and not what you think you should own; your disappointments will be a lot fewer.
No one can answer the first question with certainty and I guess the second question depends on what your collecting goals are. Are you planning on keeping the coins or selling them sometime down the road. If you are planning on keeping them, why spend the money to have them graded? At the end of the day it comes down to your goals, not someone else's. Good Luck
In addition to what USS said - you might want to consider keeping the set intact in its original packaging. Every year there is getting to be fewer and fewer of them. One of these days, that is going to matter in a financial way.
I agree with Doug. I had three of them and sold them two years ago. Two were 'minty fresh,' in original packaging and one was a PCGS 70. DID well on resale.
