Best Coin shops in your area????

In Connecticut, Phil Jones' shop in Brookfield is good, he's down to earth, helpful and honest, runs it with his daughter and son in law. At the other end of the state Guilford Coin is another father/daughter shop with other workers; they've made their millions and success usually goes to people's heads. Sam Sloat is one of the oldest and richest, where CCE apparently had its beginning. The place is like a museum, I would not sell there unless I had bullion I needed to move. They are the grandmasters of the game.

I've lived in 3 different states since I started collecting coins. I also do a lot of traveling for work and try to visit coin shops when on the road. I've come to find that my favorite coin shops are simply the ones that I dislike the least. Unfortunately, making it in the coin business must require taking advantage of your customers, because I'm yet to meet a dealer that I felt treated me completely honestly and fairly right off the bat. I purchase coins in the shops that I visit when I see something that I really want, but I hardly ever leave without feeling as though I've taken it in the rearend. They all systematically over grade their coins and refuse to acknowledge detail issues. Well, I'm sure that not "all" of them do this, but it seems to be the norm.

 

Fresno, Ca Fresno Coin, Jewelry and Loan. Started as a coin store so its not a pawn shop its a coin show that has expanded and doing great. (Jewelry is also priced well.)
Always Friendly have a good selection lots of Morgans and Peace, but just about anything else. Place is spotless inside outside isn't the greatest part of town but they have plenty of security. Two building so the pawn shop is separate.

If you're ever in Jamestown, NY...AVOID "The Stamp Company"...they purport to also be a coin dealer as well as stamps, but they know nothing about coins, and their prices are often double the book value or more. I tried to buy a roll of uncirculated 2009 FY cents, and they asked for FORTY bucks!! Forty!! You can find them at most coin shops for well under ten, and on ebay they go for 3 or 4 bucks.

 

Here's a story about a coin shop I never went to:

So yesterday, I was on a field trip with my JROTC Class to the Pacific Science Center. We had a lot of time to kill afterwards, so we ended up going to the public market in Seattle. After we grouped up and left, we passed a coin shop. I couldn't go into it and browse because we were leaving and I had no money I am still very sad

 

You beat me to this one. Arlington Coins is easily the best retail coin shop in this area, and there are some other good ones around.

 

It's been a while since I lived in the area, but when I was there, there were very few, if any, shops downtown (there was one in Embarcadero Center for a while). Downtoan SF rents are high, and prices are going to be raised accordingly.

 

Jefferson Mint in Corvallis, Oregon is a little strange to me LOL. The Florence coin shop is excellent on collector coins. He puts on a great coin show...15th Annual Show (18-19 Aug 2012) in Florence. The best dealer in the Albany area retired 6 months ago. The Reedsport Coin shop is better in Bullion.:hail: The Cottage Grove shop has very little to sell. The Eugene coin shop has tons of stuff, but very little on display. The Salem coin shop downtown has tons of coins and bullion all on display. Rogue Valley Coin in Medford does have a ton on display also.

 

rrrrr the San Francisco mint is about a 10 minute drive from me. Does that count. :hail:

That's in Dayton. It's a smaller store but it has decent choices. They have some coins on the wall that are up for auction.

 

Ok so I love all the coins +, except for the florence one. I dislike both coins + florence and florence rare coin. They aren't very smart. One of the dealers didn't know that proof coins were issued before the 1900's; I can't remember which.
Brad at coins + downtown is such a nice guy. I met him at the Sharonville show. If only it were open later.
Hyde park has a lot of gold coins and commems.
Common cents (milford) is nice. They have high end bills, coins and even low end coins; huge junk bins that you can look through.
Anderson coins + is right down the street from me. I love it; the guys there are nice and helpful. They're selection is smallish. They have a 1955 DDO (cleaned). You should stop by there.
Main Street Coin is nice. They have a decent selection.

Since when does JS gold & coin sell? I know they sell at shows, but I only see them buying.

 

I can recommend Linkville Coins & Antiques in Klamath Falls, OR. It's a very small shop run by a very nice couple. They were always willing to help and educate me, and they were happy to let me take my time pawing though their 90% silver boxes. These are people you could come in and have a nice conversation with while you looked around. Sadly, I don't live in the area anymore.

An interesting coincidence; I found out after several months of doing business that the owner was a close friend of my dad in high school.

 

The Cottage Grove shop does keep little on display due to a previous robbery, but they do have many coins not displayed. If you’re looking for something specific, you should call ahead so the coins you’re looking for are there when you arrive (541) 729-2642. The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm, but the owner is retired and is only there Saturday 11am to 5pm.

 

the kenwood store used to sell, but the store next door to them got robbed a few months back, and they got spooked and don't sell anymore (according to an employee). the store in tri-county mall still has some stuff for sale. i haven't been to any other stores.

 

colerain coins+ used to carry ancients, but they said now it's only brad and "the eastside store." i didn't know it even opened, nor did he say where it was. i might just have to make a trip out to anderson soon...

 

Anderson is definitely open. They have bills, foreigns, raw, graded, but I honestly do not recall ancients. They could have them, but I don't remember seeing them, nor looking for them.
