I'm taking a business trip out west and am thinking about doing some CRH while I'm there. I assume dumping would be an issue, so I was considering just bringing home the dumps in my carryon bag. Has anyone does this? Any trouble with security? Thanks!
Do you have an account at a bank that has branches in that area? Even if you have to re-roll it, you could probably get rid of the change wherever you're going.
How much would you consider bringing home in your carry-on bag? A couple dozen rolls would be okay but bringing home boxes worth of presumably loose coins in a carry-on would not only be a backbreaker but would most-likely cause you some delay when going through security. I recommend what Lon Chaney has suggested. Re-roll the coins as you go through them and redeem them before you fly home. Heck, you could even dump them where you bought them as what will it matter? You probably won't go to that branch again for a long time, if ever.
Unfortunately, I don't have accounts at any of the banks located in the area I will be in. I wasn't planning on hard core CRH, just surfing teller trays for half dollars really. If I could find a place with a lobby coin counter, that would be ideal.
You could always get a flat rate box and a lot of tape and mail your dumps back home. It'd be cheaper than taking the hit at a coinstar-type machine.
If you have multiple rolls of coins in your carry on it will be pulled out of the security line for a visual inspection. They usually ask me if I have rolled coin when the TSA agent pulls it off the x-ray machine. I just make sure they are somewhere that is easily accessible and I have had nothing more then a minor inconvenience with rolled coin.
