Nope. No green bean. Just an owner with the desire for green. :) $100 coin being marketed for $2,000? Yes, I pay for toning premiums, but c'mon folks!

He has the make an offer option though, so why not overprice it and see what offers you can get? I've seen it a few times on Ebay.

Yeah, he has three declined offers. Maybe I should offer him $50 bucks--that is closer to bid/ask range?

This gentleman does a lot of consignments, and considering we do not know why this coin is listed at this price, why knock the seller? Some here do not take kindly to unflattering opinions of their coins, so why do the same to someone else?

Why? There is a difference. One is an emotional reaction to negative comments made in ignorance, and the other is trying to cheat an unknowledgeable public so as to maximize profit. You don't see a distinction? :)

Anyway back to being on topic---this is a thread for outrageous E bay listings, and is a fun thread. :)

I will pay a premium for toned beauties. However, this one just doesn't have the color patterns I like. Is it a $200 coin? Maybe. :)

I've seen plenty of intelligent and experienced comments disregarded here, but to each his own. As for "trying to cheat" a less-than-knowledgeable public, I disagree... especially if consigned. Anyone willing to pay $2k for a coin without the necessary knowledge do to do so is only hurting themselves, and I've no sympathy for such a person.

That said, the coin in question is worth well above that of a white PCGS66 all day long. While I do not see it being worth anywhere near the asking price, there is nothing wrong with a little fishing.

Of course... take a look at some of Julian Leidman's ridiculous offerings. Outrageous may be an understatement.

Oh, I agree, books. I don't see a problem with a bit of fishing. As gbroke said he'd probably pay $200 for a coin like that (given the bid is around $50, and PCGS price guide is $100). I agree with him and have paid premiums for beautifully toned coins--happily so. If the seller had offered it at $500 or best offer, it would be less obnoxious. I posted this one as I thought it to be funny--we all debate the value of toned coins, and how much over going rate that we'd pay for them. To me, it was a bit of a ludicrous listing for a common date coin. $400 or $500 with best offer--sure, why not fish a bit? This one seems to be going after a shark with a minnow. :) :)

I offered 75.00, and it was rejected. Oh well I thought it was a fair offer

I'd maybe buy that one for $75-$100 or so, maybe a few bucks more if it looked even better in hand.

I guess I also have a few listings that some may think are over the top, but when I price a coin really strong I make sure to explain my asking price in the listing so everyone knows why I think the coin is more special than the average coin you can get for the price guide prices... doesn't keep the lowball offers away though :)

I listed a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar PCGS MS64 with dramatic rainbow toning for $2,000. After 6 months, I have not gotten any serious offers, just people offering $25-$50 so I dropped the price to $1,000. The coin in the OP does not have monster toning that would drive a significant premium, mine does IMO. But that doesn't stop others from ridiculing me for listing a common coin with such a high price. Check out this exchange with one of the clowns.

Clown: Do you honestly think a little rainbow toning jacks up the price as much as you have things listed??? You've got rainbows in your head !! Get real. Or maybe you'd like to buy a bunch of rainbow toned coins ??

Me: Rainbow toned coins are a niche market in numismatics. If you don't understand why rainbow toned coins sell for a premium, then don't buy them. If you don't like my prices, then either make an offer or move on. Thank you in advance for not sending me anymore nasty messages with the sole intention of wasting my time and venting your frustration.

Clown: Haha !! I don't believe that I'm the one needing to vent frustrations !! I understand the appeal of toned coins. Only a sucker would pay the kind of money you are asking. But like Barnum said........born every minute. Funny though. I can create an oxidation process which will produce exactly the same thing you are trying to sell as authentic. I have even perfected the shadowing effect that most people trying to tone coins have not. I do it FOR people and don't charge a dime. My conscience wouldn't allow it. So you see. I have NO problem with frustrations. Obviously, however, you can't make the same statement !! My response brought out YOUR frustrations. Your response only made me laugh out loud !! By the way, you said make an offer or move on. I'd give you a nickel for the penny. That.s pretty good interest. Your $16,000 coin...35 bucks..That's even more than silver content. Since the coin isn't worth any more than silver content, that's pretty good interest,too...unless of course YOU got burned on them and are trying to recoup YOUR losses !!

Me: Oh, so you are an expert coin doctor huh, yeah right! BTW, the shadowing effect is called pull away toning. Don't want you to go around sounding like an idiot. Oops, too late! Congratulations on being an E-Bay troll though. Good way to waste your life I guess. I take your comments to mean that you can't afford my prices and can only buy coins at melt. Now I understand your obvious frustrations. Furthermore, I don't have any coins listed at $16,000. I will let you know when I have a sale of face paint. A clown like you would be interested in that!

Clown: Haha !! I meant $1600 on that Kennedy half. I guess all the years at SilverTowne, I worked there when they still operated out of their basement, have been a waste,eh? Actually I've been associated with Lonnie way back to his days at the ..get this now..Rainbow Restaurant !! That's when he actually got his start...and he married in to our family. Keep your grease paint, you cloud headed clown. You'll make more money entertaining kiddies at their birthday parties. Incidentally. I used to deliver silver to Englehardt's in Boston and NY. That was the smelt stuff after the good stuff had been catalogued. Yes,smelt stuff. The kind of stuff you are pawning as "naturally toned" !!

Me: Never knew clowns were this talkative. Let me know when you are done blowin smoke silver delivery boy!

And for anyone who thinks that I should not treat a customer this way, consider this. After receiving his first message, I added him to my blocked bidder list. Therefore he was no longer a customer when I sent my response. In the end, they are my coins and I can ask whatever price I want.
