Has Anyone Noticed...

...that 80% of new threads started these days is either b!tching about banks or asking the same repetitive questions/advice over and over? Here is a sticky thread for all of those people:

YES we have all bought a box that was short coins before.

YES some banks do not like it when you bring them 3 thousand dollars worth of pennies and nickels to dump on them two days after you bought them from them.

How do you order a box....YOU ASK THE TELLER.

Congratulations! You are new to coin roll hunting. Every question you are about to ask could be answered by taking 5 minutes and researching this giant wealth of information of a message board we are currently looking at. The helplessness of some people new to the hobby is staggering. The only thing I haven't seen asked is can we all pitch in and buy the boxes for the newbie.

NO you are not going to get rich doing this. BUT when you buy 500 boxes of coins per week and dump them, you are slowly but surely ruining the hobby for those of us who love what we have done for a long time.

YES we have all had bad experiences with a teller, a bank, a box, a roll, another hunter who ruins coins by marking the crap out of them, and on and on and on. Solutions: Don't go to that teller. Find a new bank...there are thousands of them. Quit hunting because boxes, rolls, and other hunters aren't perfect. If you can handle feeling happy about getting a roll filled with silver because of the misfortune of the little old lady who didn't know any better when depositing them, then I am certain you can handle your box of halves being a dollar short once a month.

NO your penny is not worth $5,000 because it has JFK's head stamped on it.

I understand we all have had our share of bad hunting days and this is a place to vent sometimes, but my God the number of people who's first post on here is a question or comment that is so easily answered or unwarranted that it boarders on pure lazy and/or rude is just staggering.

So there I just joined the complaining thread starters club lol.

I hope I am not alone in noticing this stuff. Feel free to add if I have missed anything.

Let's get back to the congrats and intelligent hobby talk on here, which is why I recently joined after many years of hunting and simply reading what you all had to say on this board. That is how I learned. I READ :)

    Cheers hunters!!!

I don't want to sound like a nag but I kinda agree on some points. I like that we're welcoming to newcomers but I really think for the sake of keeping the forum free of redundant posts we should have some basic etiquette.

Maybe updating the FAQ with some of the more common thread topics?

Also, I like ecadies videos but maybe he should just have his own thread (or a general CRH video thread), rather than creating new threads every time he CRHes.

edit: and I really think for the sake of anyone reading this thread who isn't a CRHer, we should have some sort of disclaimer sticky that says something like "the sometimes incredible finds you see posted every day are NOT all that commonplace, and that the average person (yes, you) will skunk on a lot more boxes than they hit the jackpot on."

Why not adjust the policy to prevent posting within x days of joining, and/or requiring y number of threads read prior?

as a noob coin collector im probably guilty of it too and apologize in advance. it just gets frustrating when i find so many different opinions and my questions go unanswered. but i have tried to do more searching and reading instead of posting.

I am completely on the same page with your...okay, I'm going to say it, rant. But I think the overall mission is to "welcome" new people into the sport and not feel any animosity over the same dull/repetitive inquiries. I think if the original post gets tweaked a little to make it seem more "newbie" friendly, along with titling it "Coin Roll Hunting Q&A", then I think the same message will be communicated, but in a more positive manner. Just a thought.

And if someone starts a new thread about a question or plea for help, we can post the link to this sticky thread. And that's all we would have to do.

I agree with kookoox10 and the OP to a degree. We should update the FAQ because the organization of it is lacking and it needs updating, and we should point redundant topics to earlier ones that exist if said redundant topics are reposted. However, searching can get tough considering the function plucks every topic with a specific word so it may be easier to post a redundant topic rather than searching. Also, people may use the words they think they need to find the topic, but will be brought everything but what they want. Potentially updating tags on popular topics may help as well. That's just my take.

I'm going to disagree with the original post. What, exactly, is the issue? I've been here for a while now, and I have yet been forced to read any thread. I open threads and either read them through and respond, or simply close it and move on to the next one. I may only read the first post or two then realize it is either some rant in which I'm not interested in, some crackpot just spewing dribble or boasting about a coin he does not have, some one who starts numerous inane threads through the course of the day, troll for fun, etc. I don't roll hunt, but I do browse this particular board to see finds and read the rants (some can be pretty entertaining). Same with the "I hate eBay" type threads. The nice thing about this particular message board is I can hover my cursor over the thread link and see the first few lines of the thread. If it interests me I open it. If it doesn't, I slide the mouse to the next thread. Unless the bandwidth or storage being used by these threads you rant about is a issue, I don't really see a problem. If it does, then the admins need to be the ones to handle it. But I'm not having any real issues with the site, so I'll assume bandwidth and server space are not issues at this time.

Not everybody is internet-savvy. I originally found this board doing a Google search for coin-related information after receiving the stuff from my mother-in-law. I lurked for quite a while before actually registering and posting. I know how to use the internet and it's search functions, including the search on this site. HOWEVER, not everyone is an expert on the internet. Many of your grandmothers use the internet, but do they simply read web sites and exchange recipes and can they perform a search involving more than a page or two of results? My four year old granddaughter can access the internet and find her favorite pages with a little help, and from there play her favorite internet games on those sites. But she can't read yet, and couldn't possibly do a Google search (although she does like to say the word "Google"). These are but two extremes, most of us will fall somewhere in the middle. Some people find this site in the same manner I did, lurk, and wait for the right opportunity to post. Some find it, and can't wait to start asking questions.

So give the newbies a break. We're not all IT experts. Some simply don't want to perform the search, but just jump in, join the fray, and interact. Some may not know the search function is even there. If you limit what can and can't be asked, you turn this into simply another web site. That's the beauty of an internet forum, you can interact with other people from different walks of life. In a real life conversation, if you don't like the subject matter, or disagree with the other party, you can argue, or simply excuse yourself and walk away. The same tactic is also appropriate here, and even easier to accomplish (simply click a link).

By the way, I would be willing to bet that a lot of the rant-type threads are started by members who have been here and posted for a while, rather than the new members.

To be fair to my initial post, you are picking the part where I talk about new members. A good portion is aimed at people starting threads complaining about how horrible their banks are, or how rude a teller was, or how their box was a dollar short. You are right nobody is forced to read any thread, but my point is was a fair one so I will repeat it. If you can be handle it when some old lady unknowingly deposits $200 worth of silver and you benefit from it, or when the teller is nice enough to save special coins for you, or you find free silver in the reject tube of a machine, then is it really necessary to have a fit about a bank not wanting to order boxes for you any longer, or not wanting to handle thousands of dollars of coin deposits from you any longer? Simply find a new bank. There are thousands of them. The bulk of our hobby is us getting lucky based on the ignorance (about silver/coin value) of others, and I don't see any threads started complaining about those poor people. So I am sorry if I don't feel bad when myself, or someone else has some tiny bank or coin issue. The good far outweighs the bad in this hobby, so I am simply saying post ALL DAY LONG about your great stories and finds. I love to read them. I just don't see the point in the other stuff.

And finally, I agree not everyone is I.T. competent. But if you are able to make an account on here and start a thread in order to ask questions, then I would think you are able to click on the results thread and read away. I spent months and months enjoying reading many of your posts and learned a lot by doing so. In fact the first post I ever made on here was complimenting the members and thanking them for such a great place and how much I had enjoyed watching how well many of you do with the hobby. I wouldn't be as into the hobby as I am now had I not found this board. So I guess it just irks me a little when I see someone's first post is a thread that sounds more like they are looking for answers on how to get rich quick coin roll hunting. People like that are making the hobby much harder for those of us who actually do it for fun.

Your point is taken, however, and my post was a generalization. Obviously every newbie does not fall into the category I was referencing.

Okay, but it is human nature to complain. Heck, you just started a thread complaining about people who complain. The internet just makes it that much easier, and provides a wider audience to hear the complaints. Same with bragging, human nature for the most part. Again, the world wide web gives us a wider audience. The anonymity of the internet makes it even easier for someone who ordinarily wouldn't say things in front of an crowd out of fear of embarrassment and heckling can now hide behind his computer screen and rant till his heart's content. Kind of like beer muscles. Most people here will never know who he is. And he can ignore the heckling by simply clicking an "ignore" button, without having to leave the room with his tail between his legs. No red-faced running from the crowd. On a similar note, the internet makes it easier for us to dismiss or ignore these type of people as well.

While it is possible for the administrators to edit and bar certain types of conversation (don't confuse your right to free speech with the privilege of stating your views on a privately owned internet forum), as long as they filter the offensive content (it is a family-friendly forum), and they are able to manage the bandwidth and server space, what's the problem? Newbie or veteran poster, the board still provides the ability to choose which threads you want to read, and preview and/or ignore posters who's content you aren't interested in.

Besides, I find it entertaining to read and participate in some of those discussions.

1.) I like how a person with 32 posts is ripping on all the "new" members for posting questions...

2.) This website is free to all that will abide the rules of the forum. If you don't like a particular post ignore it. It's not like the search function for this forum is perfect.

3.) I noticed you made a post complaining about bank policies not too long ago. Isn't it funny how we can get so sick and tired of reading other members complaint posts, especially after we posted similar ones ourselves...hmmmm? ;) jrc812911 complaining about banks:foot-mouth:

    4.)
It's funny to see a member's position change over time. Just kidding around with you jrc812911, but I had to call you out on this one

I have been actively mining cents since 2005/6 or so and have lots of stories. Over time though I have finessed my experiences, and do not accept disappointment. Sure I go into banks that don't know me well and are initially standoffish about selling coins. Sure sometimes I come out with maybe only $10 worth of cents, but I talk my way up whenever possible. I have made tellers, branch managers etc my friends(even on facebook!). I don't mind handing out boxes of my favourite candies, occasional baseball or hockey tickets, gift cards where allowed, and one teller even had me search out my bags of British coins for ten silver sixpences for her grandchildren's weddings.

My point is this, you reap what you sow. This is a dog eat dog business, and if you go in with a chip on your shoulder you are going to crash and burn. I have a couple of credit unions that take all my discarded coin in their machines. I usually never buy coin there because they generally don't have it - but unlike most people that come in and dump coins and ditch the place, I like to donate to their competitive charity programmes, bring boxes of you guessed it - my favourite candy! etc. They like me because I appreciate them.

You know they love you when they call you on your cellphone when they have special things come over the counter and ask you to get in quick. My wife wonders who all the ladies on my answering machine are - bank tellers!

You know tellers love you when they call you ASAP when stuff like this little treasure comes across the counter this morning:

The first note in the left corner is a star note. The teller that sold me these this morn is getting married soon. Looks like she will be getting a better wedding present from me!

Agreed. Nor is anyone with only 32 posts is new to the forum. However, with only the post count and the content of the threads, we really have no other way to determine experience. So we respond as we see fit.
